Rant: Sick Days

Go take a sick day yourself to get "even" or whatever. It's part of the overall compensation package provided by an employer, so why not use it.

Some people are saying too many sick days will get you fired, but wouldn't that just mean you work at a crappy company if you can't use your benefits. Or maybe you aren't really needed and they are looking for an excuse to fire you. Obviously it would be different in teaching or healthcare roles.

I think you're totally wrong. Nobody likes employees who abuse sick leave by taking it when they are not sick. It ruins it for everyone because then Employers have to limit leave, implement draconian policies about notes, etc. most good employerd want to be able to give people time off when they are actually sick--but even the nice employerd don't want to give people time off if they are just being lazy or are "stressed out by life." The people who treat it as "just part of the compensation package" are begging for a combined PTO program, where every sick day you take comes out of your vacation. Sick days are supposed to be like insurance. Employers can afford to give more when they know that not every employee will need to use 100% of them.

I have been at my job 14 years and I have taken 3 sick days. Do adults really get sick that often?

Yes. I get at least one bad head cold a year, and so do most other adults I know. I stay home when I'm contagious to avoid infecting others.

Maybe eat better, up the exercise and wash your hands like crazy?

Do you feel better being so judgmental? It's called a common cold because it's common to catch it. Sheesh.
