Is there any chance to change the high school boundary within 2-3 years? - especailly Oakton HS

Anonymous

I am considering buying a small condo assigned to Oakton HS currently.

But since it is at the very edge of the boundary, I am concerned about changing boundaries.

Is there any chance?

I don't know much about Oakton HS, but DC's friends are assigned there.

Does anybody know?

google FCPS CIP and read the parts related to Oakton. Even if it is in there, it won't necessarily happen soon.... or at all. But, I don't think they would make a boundary change that isn't listed in there. they tend to be very S L O W in implementing anything.

Now, that everything is online, it is easier to keep track. However, the SB has been notorious for changing boundaries.
I don't know which "edge" of the boundary you are talking about, OP, but the Fox Mill/Franklin Farm area is constantly included in boundary change discussions.

Also, are you going to live in the condo or is this for school purposes? If you don't live in it, it is illegal to use the residence for school purposes.

OP, if you are buying close to school-near 29, it is unlikely those will be redistricted. If you are buying further from the school, maybe. Good luck!

I'm curious about this too. My child goes to Oakton ES, but is in the Madison/Thoreau pyramid - most of Oakton ES seemingly is Oakton HS/Jackson. I think it lame that my child's ES school friends will go to a different MS and HS. But there is talk that Oakon ES might get redistricted over to Thoreau. If they did that, would that also move them to Madison HS and away from Oakton HS?

No. The kids would go to Thoreau rather than Jackson, but stay at Oakton HS.

PP is correct. High schools would not change. Only the MS assignment.

I could see Oakton ES moving to Madison eventually.

With Tysons getting larger I'm not sure why schools wouldn't be moving the other way. Isn't there a new high school planned for out west.

Agreed.

Oakton high is being renovated. I don't foresee OES kids moving over to Madison. In fact I see a shift of more to OHS as Madison boundaries move to include more of Tysons. This area is being built up quickly. Marshall, Madison and Oakton are all great high schools with overcrowding issues. Boundaries are bound to shift, but the HS shifts won't affect home values as the schools are similar.

For next school year, Oakton will have over 2600 kids - largest freshmen class in years. Not sure where those kids are coming from now that we are several years removed from the Fox Mill redistricting to South Lakes.

And yes, with the multi-year renovations beginning this summer at the school, trailers are going to be a fact of life for the foreseeable future.

I have no idea what this means for future redistricting efforts, although I understand that the enrollment is projected to move closer to 3000 over the next several years. Just 4-5 years ago, Oakton's enrollment was closer to 2100.

Absolutely, OP.

My guess is South Lakes, Herndon, Oakton, Chantilly and Westfield will likely see a boundary change. From what I recall, it would be at the end of the Silver line and Carson and part of Franklin and part of Hughes and Herndon would feed into it.

It seems like once that high school is built, McLean would take on some of Stuart's overcrowding, Langley would absorb some of Marshall's and Mclean's island would likely go to Madison (so McLean could take on the additional capacity from Stuart) and some of Madison would go to Oakton since's there's more capacity due to the new high school.

Westfield would apparently relieve Centreville's overcrowding.

If you have a small kid in that part of the county, I'd expect to see some serious shifts.

There's no major boundary shift planned for the southern part of the county, but it's needed. I think the new high school would force the county's hand on the northern schools, though.

Oh and in terms of demographics, if this happens, McLean will look a lot more like Marshall, Langley will be basically the same (absent taking on some of Herndon's feeders), Madison and Oakton would be the same, South Lakes wouldn't change much (since Dogwood and Fox Mill would likely feed into the new school canceling each other out), Chantilly would be the same, and Westfield would look basically the same (with Coates now going to the new school). Marshall would lose some single family homes to Langley, but with Pimmit gentrifying and Tysons, would be the same.

The new school would take Coates, Fox Mill, Dogwood, McNair, Floris, Oak Hill. Parts of other feeders like Crossfield and Navy might feed into it. In terms of demographics, it would look like Marshall basically.

That's why I see the county giving in and doing the massive redistricting if they build that high school. No one is getting saddled and the demographics would even out while alleviating crowding.
