SAT "adversity" adjustment

This is a tool which will help colleges do what they are already doing a little bit better -- and to have a quantifiable way to explain their decisions. Not a new paradigm.

It should be optional for a student to report to colleges.

If two students have same family income, one family lives in a $1,300 apartment in Bethesda attending BCC but the other family lives in a. $1,300 apartment in Montgomery Village attending WM. Should the one attending BCC get a lower score? How about a student whose family lives in a $2 million dollar house in Bethesda attending BCC?

There are wide spreed of SES in any given zipcode. How does college board know if a student from a wealth family or a low income family?

Because they are using census tract data for the home - which are more refined than zip codes. They do both attend the same high school, a high performing with many resources, so their index shouldn’t be too different, but their economic background is different. The typical education level of their respective census tracts is part of the index too.
