Yep, he's going to get charged with violating campaign finance laws by making fraudulent disclosures. I really can't believe McCarthy isn't getting ahead of this. Kicking Swalwell and Schiff off Intel while handing committee assignments to this obvious fraudster and criminal is a really bad look.

He's safe in his own district, but if he wants to remain as speaker he's got to think about how this plays in the swing districts that gave the GOP its very narrow majority. And how it's going to play in Santos's district when he eventually gets charged and then there's a special election.

Criminal investigations aren’t instant either and there’s no way that Santos is resigning without a complete one that indicts him. He’ll probably be like the last three convicted Republican congressmen and won’t even resign until after he’s convicted.

Yes, I understand that. But Santos isn't going to make it more than a couple months here. He's committed some very blatant crimes. If he's not charged by April, I will be shocked. McCarthy might have salvaged the GOP reputation in that district if he had come down hard on Santos, but his decision to protect him is going to play very badly in that special election when it happens this summer. So he's traded a few months of Santos's vote for a year and a half of a D vote. And the next few months are not particularly the important ones. The bigger votes on approps and whatnot are going to happen this fall and winter while Santos is sitting in a jail cell. He may not even make it to the first round of the debt ceiling fight later this spring.

Kevin doesn’t care about remaining Speaker. He’ll forever be a Former Speaker with a plaque and portrait. That’s all he cares about. And those swing districts will be Dems next cycle.

Not sure. He did not bring out any of this garbage about Santos either when he ran against him and won easily. But in any case, he could take the special election or the 2024 election.
