How much do you save for college per year?

For us it's 5K a year per child. One set of grandparents also contribute 5k a year per child.

Started at $3k per year per child and increased to $8k per year per child when they reach 8th grade.

We're now saving about $11K per child per year (2 kids) but didn't start saving until mid-ES when I went back to work, and then increased to the current level when they moved to MS and we were no longer paying for aftercare.

Very little; relying on inheritance, need-based and merit aid.

4K per child because that's the max that helps us on our taxes.

We did it in clumps. When they were very young, we purchased the prepaid tuition. Then we put in bonuses into at 529 until there was enough for r&b plus books (estimate). We fully funded our Roth's annually for more, in case they went out of state. Plus we doubled our emergency fund just in case. We are in the pay out years and both have gone out of state- one costs $40-45k a year and one will cost $50k a year. My father died last year and I received an unexpected windfall, so we will not have to delve into the Roths. Plus, our food and housing cost has/will decrease with the boys out of the house, freeing up much more than anticipated. ?

15k per child

Zero dollars per year. I might get a second job next summer when my DD is a bit older so I can start saving. I am working on saving for retirement.

The max deduction is $4K per account per beneficiary.

2 kids, 14 and 16. We only have $150k saved up which excludes 2 years of pre-paid tuition if one of them attends a Virginia school. Definitely not enough! We only save about $10,000 now a year which is not enough in my opinion but my wife controls the $$.

We're hoping the bubble bursts and prices start to come down.

A good friend who's an RN picked up extra prn (as needed) work with a major insurer last June and has been able to stash $25k. In lieu of benefits, prn nurses get $$$. My friend decided not to take a loan and, hopefully, will not have to for the next four years. With the grant money and prn money, tuition is paid for freshman year.

My concern is how the extra income might impact sophomore year.

We did the prepaid when child was a few months and paid it off by age 4. We then only put a few thousand a year into the 529. At 7, I just put in $10K this year but it will vary year to year. I'd like to do more as we want to pay for college and graduate school. We know we cannot pay for a private but will do the best we can.

I am a teacher and I'm trying to think of a summer job where I can make as much money as possible.
