High school boys shouting ethnic and sexist slurs

Anonymous
I've recently been spending time at the local high school, where we had planned to send our child in a few years. It's in Fairfax (not Fairfax HS). However, on the two occasions I was there, groups of boys were heard shouting really obnoxious racial slurs. I heard the n-word and a lot of comments about Jews, and some horrible things about some of the high school girls. These things were being shouted - very loudly - so that everyone within a hundred yards could hear. All of the students were boys and all were white, and at least some were definitely not Jews (their parents go to our church). I'm wondering if I should be concerned about the culture of this school. Is this just the way kids talk now, and maybe it means nothing? Or does this indicate a strong culture of racism, sexism, and anti-semitism in this high school?

Sounds contrived. You've been spending time there...on two occasions? It's also odd how you referred to these supposed epithets in the passive tense ("boys were heard" rather than "I heard boys"). And you were close enough to ID kids from your church, but not so close that the kids moderated their trash-talking. Sorry, this doesn't quite add up.

You might think that boys have changed since you and I were in high school, but alas, no such luck.

You should have went to the media! The Washington Post has been documenting every swastika drawn in a bathroom stall and racial slurs sung on a bus up in Montgomery County. I'm sure Fairfax would appreciate the coverage as well.

While this can happen, pls bear in mind that many in that age range (both genders) sound like a South Park rerun anyway.

Girls haven't changed either. Except perhaps, to become more aggressive.

That's the truth.

When I was in high school, boys trashed girls all the time. Sad that it's the same 30 years later. But no one EVER shouted racial slurs. Can't remember that happening even once. And they didn't talk trash where parents could hear.

Wow, this totally answers my question, thanks. Apparently people in this area really are OK with racism and anti-semitism. I'm from the north, so I didn't realize how backwards y'all down here in the south are. Seems NoVa is not as northern as it thinks it is.

I agree, be more worried about girls in middle & high school.

Odd story though, OP, where were the boys heard screaming these things, at a school pep rally? Our school stopped them in the early 90's because seniors kept chanting "freshman suck"

OP got impatient with the lack of interest in the made-up post and showed the rest of his/her cards too soon.
