Where do you buy fish?

I'd like to start giving my kids fish, but where do you find fish that isn't farm-raised (losts of antiobotics) or doesn't come from countred wth unscrupulous fishing tactics?

Toughie. If you live in the Palisades, Black Salt is excellent. Although some people may say Wagshal's in Spring Valley, I think their meat is excellent but their fish is eh. I think Whole Foods generally has good info on their seafood. I HATE the seafood at Giant and Safeway. They always look pretty gross. If you live in the 'burbs, the Asian markets actually have tanks of fish swimming around. Many of them are freshwater, which tend to be less mercury laden than sea fish. You can pick one and they will kill it and fillet it for you right there. Not much fresher than that if you can stand the lack of English skills on the part of the fish monger and looking into the fishy little eyes before getting them wrapped in paper a few minutes later.

All of our fish comes from Whole Foods. Fish in other groceries just look so bad. My twins love it! They are 2.5 and will eat any type which is put in front of them!

Try printing a seafood guide and bringing it to the store with you: http://www.mbayaq.org/cr/cr_seafoodwatch/download.asp

Maine Avenue Fish Market in SW DC. It's about 100 times the size and selection of your Giant/Safeway fish section.

I go to HMart on Georgia Avenue, it's a Korean supermarket and they have excellent fresh fish at very reasonable prices.

River Falls Seafood in Potomac or Whole Foods

Trader Joes has a great selection of farm raised fish. It's in their freezer section and the prices are fair.

I second 13:53. You must do your own research and carry the little card of safe seafoods in your wallet (safe for you and the planet)

Most of the fish at Trader Joes is either farm-raised or severely endangered. Orange Roughy is a prime example. It should be illegal to even catch or sell it, but they alway keep it in stock.

Whole foods sells a few fish that are OK, and they put a little note on the sign to say "MSC Certified" which means it is sustainably harvested. I question the Sea Bass, which has a reputation for being over-fished, but otherwise they are inline with my little card.

In general, you can always count on Alaskan (Pacific) Salmon. The Atlantic is totally overfished in the wild, and otherwise farm-raised.

Sorry - I don't know name or exact address ( I tried to google but no results) but if you are near Alexndria there is one off the Glebe exit (from 395 N) it is on the right - less than a mile.

If you are in Maryland, check out the fishmonger who comes to the parking lot of the Bethesda Community Store every Friday afternoon. They also go to Kensington.

I also recently discovered the DC Fish Market at the Waterfront. So much fresh fish there! Does anyone know where it comes from? Here's an article about it:
