| Asking others because I honestly don't know. My ILs are coming to town for my DH's grandfather's funeral. The next day we are hosting a cookout--about 25 people. Some relatives are staying with us and others in a nearby hotel. My SIL is bringing 2 cats and staying at a pet-friendly hotel. She wants the cats to stay at our house during the funeral and reception (so they aren't cooped up in the hotel) and come to the cookout the next day. My first instinct is to say no, but I'm not sure I have a good reason--the cats go to the bathroom in the toilet (which I think is gross, but whatever), they generally don't jump on countertops, my toddler is ok with cats, and nobody (as far as I know) is allergic. Is it ok to say no (to me, I just don't want the risk of cats breaking things while we're gone as well as the nuisance of making sure my toddler doesn't pull the cats' tails while I'm trying to host) or am I overreacting? |
| Sure you can say no. |
| You can say no. If you want to accommodate her a little, you could have the cats but limit them to one room. |
| Limit to one room/bathroom. She must check on them every hour. |
| Why is she even bringing them? Cats generally find travel stressful. |
| Yes. That hair will be everywhere. And the cats will probably be so scare they will hide in some wall in your house forever. |
I had one stored under my seat on a recent flight. Cried the whole damn time. It escaped its carrier. And when the owner tried to sooth it on her lap is got diarrhea everywhere. I hate cats |
| I would say no but I don't have a better reason other than I don't like cats. I don't want anything ruined, smell, cat hair, etc. And I don't want there to be an expectation for future visits. |
| It would be better to hire a pet sitter. Is your sister mentally challenged it stupid? |
+ 1. Mine can't even handle the one mile trip to the vet for annual physical. They begin panting and hyperventilated and evacuate their bowels. |
| Hard no. |
|
Not really a cat person, but I thought one of their main advantages over dogs is they aren't really pack animals and can be left at home just fine.
Unless she travels with them all the time and they are used to it and like it, it seems like it would be very stressful for them and therefore kind of selfish. |
| Nope, not in your house This is not your issue. Let her figure this out. |
|
The cats will be super stressed out and will be shedding like crazy.
I would not want to deal with this while hosting other people and getting ready for the cookout. I would say no, that it's not a good time. I imagine it would also be difficult to quarantine the cats to one room because it sounds like every room in your house will be in use with out of town guests. You also couldn't just lock them in the bathroom because with 25 guests, someone will need to use the bathrooms. Just say no. It's a weird request. |
| If it's a cookout, people will be going in and out of the house and the cats might get out. I love cats, but that would be my concern if it was my cat and a good reason for you telling her it wouldn't be a good situation. |
