If you got a publicly funded private placement

How long did the whole thing take? If your kid was not making progress, school admitted such, there was no other suitable placement and you ask to go private what is the timeline for making that happen and did you have to sue or not? This is in MoCo.

Yes, you'll need to "sue" that's the part where you get an attorney. I highly doubt MCPS will give you a slot in a private placement voluntarily.

In terms of timeline, it could be a year or years or years and not happen.

As an educator in MCPS I've been part of teams that have sent kids to private placements without legal representation on the part of the family, because the children genuinely needed it. If the school has not brought up the possibility to you, it's unlikely that they're waiting to spring it on you at a meeting. Usually the subject has been broached beforehand to get an idea of if the family would consider it or not.

If the school team is not in agreement, it can take quite a while. Outside people will have to come in and do observations and arrange more meetings and the process is not quick when coordinating so many different schedules.

It depends whether the school agrees with you.

OP here. I knew I would get "answers" like this, which are just pure speculation. You clearly aren't informed about our case or others where in fact they do admit that they cannot serve the student in question.

I think when it gets to the point where both the parents and the school admits that the public school does not have a suitable placement, the timeline is very dependent on the individual facts on hand. No one but you knows these. It is impossible to answer your question. If the school is also promoting private placement, you may be able to get in as soon as the fall- but that means a school - with availability- has to be found. I am in FCPS, and the only cases I know of like this involve therapeutic schools.

Each case is different. Even if the school says it is not an appropriate placement, mcps might want to try your child in a different placement before considering a private placement. How many placements has your child tried (I ask because my own child was bounced a few times). If central office agrees that there is no suitable placement, then you will probably be able to start in the fall if you can find a school that is appropriate, on the approved list, and with openings.

We're an MCPS family that got private funding. We had to hire an advocate and have some IEP meetings with the school. Unfortunately my child did have to go through a lot of difficulties in order to prove that the public setting was not appropriate. While it was difficult and it took a school year to demonstrate the difficulty we did get placement without an attorney.

Nope. Have a private placement. That's how I know. So no need to be snippy and condescending.

And of course, I'm not informed about your case. Duh. If your home school can't serve your kid, MCPS will likely suggest alternate public school programs. If central office says to you, "Oh, your kid should go to X private school," play the lottery that day while your luck lasts.

If they are suggesting it and admitting they can't do it they can schedule a central IEP meeting. If that team agrees they will suggest a group of schools they will send referral packets to those schools. The schools then have to do their own reviews and will accept or deny admission. You as a parent will also have a chance to visit those schools and tell them your top choice. This can happen fairly quickly like in a few months. The problem is if you don't agree of the list of schools or you want your child at a school that is not on their approved list. No idea how long that could take.

I meant if they are suggesting private placement and admitting they can't serve your child within MCPS...

I just want to reiterate that it is not about the school stating they cannot meet your child's needs, but about the higher up people (central iep) admitting it. Have you met for a ciep meeting yet?

Then why not answer the question and say how long it took so that the actual answers give a range of times?
