Are you switching schools?

Anonymous
Is anyone who has been very involved in their school making a school change for next year? Did you tell the school or are you assuming they will figure it out when you don't reenroll? Is anyone still trying to decide to stay or go?

We are leaving. Haven't told the school yet. Our school community talks a lot and since we have not told DS yet, we are waiting.

Grass greener? Does anyone know if the current school is automatically notified when yohmu enroll elsewhere?

I am pretty sure we are leaving our current school. We have not told anyone, but feel like it's the best long-term decision. We will probably have to tell others when we don't re-enroll. Not looking forward to it.

Yes - when you accept a seat at a school through the MSDC lottery, the school you are leaving is notified.

We're trying to decide about staying at a private PK we love and a charter that also sounds good.

#8 on the waitlist for our 2nd choice and will leave if called. Two parents know, but our children does not.

No, not at all. Had to send in 2 notices that we will come next year. They want to know how many kids are staying for 5th grade.
DC did well on his Parcc tests without me having to check his homework for 2 years. DC did well because of his teachers and because his classmates do well. He doesn't want to be left behind.
We love the school and so does DC.

We are very involved and love the school/community, but if lottery gods had favored us, we would have left this year because it's a bad fit for dc. I hope to have better lottery luck next year. It will suck - I try to remind myself that I shouldn't be relying on my kid for my social life.

If you are involved in the school and spend time with other parents, then it is already known by at least some that your child is having problems there or that the school isn't ideal in some way (commute, you want immersion etc). So it won't be a shocker. And no one will take it personally.

Not necessarily, we are very happy with our school and thought we would strike out in the lottery so planned to stay another year. We just weren't sure about long-term. Then, we got into our top choice, unbelievably, and feel like we can't pass up the opportunity to switch. I will be sad to leave.

Is anyone burning bridges on their way out, planning on having "words" with the ED etc.

Yep, me too--it's tough because we don't know many people here and have met great friends through our neighborhood school. However, still leaving because kid's education comes first. Kid is thriving but we really like the new school's curriculum, which neighborhood school doesn't offer.

A quick "we are making the best decision for our family" shuts things down pretty quickly I've found

Truth.

Many people will be understanding. Some of them did the same as you and just didn't "win" the school they wanted. Some of them chose not to do the lottery, but understand that other people make different decisions.

That being said, there are some people who will judge. Some people will make snide remarks about choices you make and what the "real" reasons are. Etc. Etc.

At the end of the day, you do what is best for your family but understand the consequences of those decisions.
