Does anyone have experience with reactions to amoxicillian? My daughter (10 months) broke out with a rash (looks like hives) on day 7 of treatment with amoxicillian for an ear infection. She is on benadryl and an oral steroid, but she still seems so itchy, swollen, and uncomfortable. The doctor said it could last 10 days. If you have been through this, did it really last 10 days? Any suggestions for making her more comfortable? |
Hi! We went through it and it didn't last 10 days. She seemed so uncomfortable though. |
I would actually take her to an allergist ASAP to figure out whether this is an adverse reaction to amoxicillin, or a true allergic reaction. The way you describe it sounds like a true allergic reaction (technically, "serum-sickness like reaction.") My DS had this at 10 months as well, along with a very high fever. It was misdiagnosed at Childrens.
The difference is, that with an amoxicillin adverse reaction, it's not a true allergy and the child can take penicillin in the future. But with a serum sickness reaction, they cannot. http://umm.edu/health/medical/altmed/condition/serum-sickness https://sciencebasedmedicine.org/are-you-sure-youre-allergic-to-penicillin/ I can't remember how long it lasted acutely, but I don't think it was 10 days. We didn't even get prescribed steroids. |
DS had it on day 5 of his second round of Amox. Lasted a week. Wasn't put on steroids but he was very very uncomfortable. |
1142 is right. My daughter seems to get an amoxicillin rash which are tiny dots on her chest and back that are not itchy (she couldn't care less). I have shown pics of the rash to three doctors and they describe it as non-descript- it's not hives. At this point she can take the drug again. An allergy typically is very itchy, which it sounds like your child has. |
My son got it around age 4. I took him to the ER worried. They said give benadryl. No steroid. It didn't seem bother him but looked really bad. Within a day or two it started to fade and lasted maybe 5-6 days. I also used hydrocortisone or the benadryl cream, cannot remember. |
No experience with DD, but it happened to me a few years ago. Also on day 7 of Amoxicillin course. Hopefully it's not as bad for your DC, but man, it was the most miserable experience of my life. No joke, I'd rather give birth again (granted, with an epidural) than have a rash like I did. I basically turned into one giant hive and "itchy" doesn't come close to explaining the sensation.
I think Benadryl and steroids are as much as they can officially do, other than that I basically didn't wear clothing for a week (EVERYTHING irritated it) and continually slathered on Aveeno and took oatmeal baths. So I'd recommend down to a diaper and laying on a cool sheet as much as possible, with lotion and cool baths as much as she'll tolerate. Sorry, and good luck! |
DS had an amox reaction - big swollen hives - when he was about 9 months old. He had previously had amox without any issues. He looked awful but did not seem at all itchy or uncomfortable. They resolved on their own (we quit the amox). He has not had a penicillin since then (now in middle school) but I was thinking about asking for a skin test at his next wellness exam. |
DH gets a "viral" rash every time he has a virus. It sounds a lot like what you describe. Tiny dots on his chest, back, and arms. Never bothers him but he gets it with every virus that he gets. |
That's actually what the doctors think it is, and that it's just a coincidence it happens when she was on amoxicillin. |
My DS got full-body hives from amoxicillin. Technically, he can have over cillins because they do not usually react to all of them. However, since there are so many other antibiotics out there, he hasn't had any cillins since then.
We gave him benadryl and the hives went away pretty quickly, in a day or two. |
Similar story here except for our then 9-month old, it was his first time with Amoxicillin. Enormous red, raised welts that the pediatrician said were hives. He did not seem uncomfortable. The hives showed up a couple days after he finished the 10-day course of Amoxicillin and lasted a few days. Oddly, they moved around his body -- he'd go to sleep with hives on his face and wake up 2 hours later with hives on his arms, none on his face. Etc. DH's father is allergic to Penicillin so the ped said DS probably is as well and in the 2+ years since then we've used other antibiotics. Ped said we should get him formally tested by an allergist when he is older. He has other skin issues (prone to excema) and allergies (environmental) so we're compiling a list for the eventual testing, which ped said not to bother with before he's 5 or so. |
I've also heard that it is some kind of unknown interaction between the virus and the amoxicillin, but still not a true allergy. |
Has anyone had an experience with this more recently? My one year old just developed a full body rash after finishing his 10th day of amox. He is itchy around ears and head (particularly at bedtime), but otherwise in an ok mood. Dr thinks it's just a "side effect" of the amox (NOT an allergic reaction), but want to see him to check whether the ear infection went away. |
This happened to my DD but we were told it wasn't a drug reaction, but rather she had scarlet fever (she started amoxicillin due to testing positive for strep throat). Do you think your DD had strep along with an ear infection? Claritin helped with the itchiness and it went away completely in about 3 days. |
