DS had an amox reaction - big swollen hives - when he was about 9 months old. He had previously had amox without any issues. He looked awful but did not seem at all itchy or uncomfortable. They resolved on their own (we quit the amox). He has not had a penicillin since then (now in middle school) but I was thinking about asking for a skin test at his next wellness exam.
Similar story here except for our then 9-month old, it was his first time with Amoxicillin. Enormous red, raised welts that the pediatrician said were hives. He did not seem uncomfortable. The hives showed up a couple days after he finished the 10-day course of Amoxicillin and lasted a few days. Oddly, they moved around his body -- he'd go to sleep with hives on his face and wake up 2 hours later with hives on his arms, none on his face. Etc. DH's father is allergic to Penicillin so the ped said DS probably is as well and in the 2+ years since then we've used other antibiotics. Ped said we should get him formally tested by an allergist when he is older. He has other skin issues (prone to excema) and allergies (environmental) so we're compiling a list for the eventual testing, which ped said not to bother with before he's 5 or so.
