| Does Arlington offer something like this? I didn't see anything on the website of the school we are interested in. I know that the school said that the Thursday or Friday before school starts kids get to meet their teacher, but I was wondering if there are any other open house events in May or over the summer for incoming students. We are going on vacation that last week of August so we won't be able to attend the meet the teacher event, I was just wondering if there will be another opportunity for DS1 to see his school before he starts. |
| Check with the PTA. Some arrange playdates at school prior to the start of school. |
| A lot of the schools so some sort of carnival/fair in the Spring. Check the school's website for their calendar or call the office. It's fun and a nice way to get acquainted with the school community. |
| OP here: Thank you everyone. Those are some good ideas. |

Is your DS a rising kindergartner? If so I would really reconsider that week of vacation and at least try to be back so he can go meet his teacher, see his classroom, etc.
Are you on MONA? They usually do rising K playdates over the summer. |

OP here: Yes, he is a rising kindergartner. I don't think we can reconsider vacation. Everything is paid for, but maybe we can come back a day early or so. I just looked at the school and it seems like they are having some rising K thing in May, so hopefully he gets a tour of the school then.
I do feel bad if he doesn't get to meet his teacher, but he has been in full time care since 6m months and just started a new preschool at 5, with no issues transitioning. So hopefully it will be okay. I am in S. Arlington, so no luck with MONA. |
| Are you already registered for kindergarten? At least some of the elementary schools have a kindergarten info session the last day of spring break (a week from Monday) where kids get to meet the K teachers and see a classroom while the parents go to an info session. |
Where do you see this? There are tours for parents but I haven't seen anything where kids can go too. |
Yes, already registered. I went to an info session already, but it was parents only. The only one left is this Thursday, but it doesn't say anything about kids. I know other counties have ones where the kids get to attend, but this doesn't seem to be the case in Arlington. |
Our school does a incoming K meet and greet where all the rising K students get to see all the K classrooms and meet all the grade level teachers in June (class assignments aren't done yet, so you meet all the teachers you might have). Then there are two or three summer play dates, plus the week before school starts kids are invited to come to their specific classroom. This is south Arlington. Pretty sure most schools have a similar set up and it was more than enough for kid to feel good about starting school. |

I don't think it is such a big deal. We were on vacation when our oldest went to K in Arlington and we were on vacation for meet your teacher day. We had gone to the playground at school several times over the summer at her school, so she was familiar with the outside. A lot of PTAs sponsor Rising K Play dates. If yours does not, you could offer to host! At our school, we host play dates several weekends over the summer so that families with rising kindergarteners can get to know each other. Very low key - and free!
Welcome to Arlington! |
| OP here - Thanks everyone! |
| OP - what school? Your wording "the school we are interested in" makes me curious. Is it not your neighborhood school? We could give you more specific advice if we know more. |
15:32 here, I agree that knowing what school you're talking about will be helpful for giving you specific information. The individual schools set their own schedules for these things, there's no date the entire school system has an event for rising kindergartners. |
