Moving to Latin for High School

Anonymous
Parent of a 6th grader at a DCPS middle school and thinking ahead ahead about high school. Would appreciate some feedback from parents of Latin students. If a student didn't go to Latin for middle, is it difficult to adjust for high school? Asking both about curriculum and social adjustment. Are there spots available for students in 9th from schools other than the Latin Middle school? Wasn't able to determine how many middle school students stay for high and whether the high school grades are bigger than the middle school ones.

Thank you

The adjustment should be fine. It's a warm happy place and the academics are not terribly advanced.

Last year they offered 10 new slots at 9th. So it doesn't expand by much.

3-4 years ago it was a given that as many as 1/3 of the students left after 8th to attend private or SWW. More seem to be staying for HS now that they are in their permanent space and have placed a couple graduating classes in college.

Hmm. So if you were IB for Wilson and good shot at Walls, would Latin be a no go?

I would think so.

Depends on your kid and what you want. It is a nice, small school. It is nearly impossible to lottery in at 9th due to few spaces for new kids. In that way SWW is much easier.

Heck don't a fair number of Latin kids lottery into SWW? I would think that's the primary source of 8/9th transition attrition.

My son entered Latin at 9th grade and it was a great move. He hasn't had any difficulty making friends and the academics were not that much different than the small private school that he came from. He really likes the teachers (he didn't at his previous school). He is really happy with the move (it came down to Latin or another small private school for us and we are happy with our decision). Entering in 9th there is less room for electives since the kids have to complete 3 years of Latin and 2 years of a modern language (kids that have attended Latin since middle school do two of the years of Latin in middle and can do one of the years of their modern language in middle school).

A few kids go to Walls, a few to private, and a few to Wilson.

The Latin community is a very warm and welcoming one. I don't think there would be any problem entering in 9th grade. It's a good bunch of kids and the teachers and administrators are very committed, competent and caring. Also, the level of support provided for the college application process is admirable and I suspect much higher than that on offer at Walls (or Wilson), in part because of the smaller number of students in each graduating class.

What AP classes are offered at Latin? Or do they do IB instead?

They offer AP courses. Don't have a list handy, but it's a wide variety. If memory serves, not all that much smaller than the number offered at Wilson or Walls. But best to check with the school, the number has been on the rise.
