How does Trayon White still have a job?

Lopez is a small time insignificant actor that fools like Bowser associate with on her way up but can't seem to quit when she gets to the big time.

Yup. And if Lopez was taken by surprise, and as you say, what did he think the Farrakhan wannabe would say, why didn't he just lower the bullhorn when the racist started in with his shit?

I was just coming here to post my outrage. I have defended Trayon White from charges of anti-Semitism because I didn't feel that his words or actions met the bar of anti-Semitism, though he did appear to be very insensitive to anti-Semitism. In the case of yesterday's rally, there was unequivocal anti-Semitism. One correction to the post that I am quoting. Lopez didn't organize the rally to create a "safe zone" for anti-Semites. Rather, one speaker at the event expressed a much different message than the others that spoke. All speakers but the Nation of Islam member expressed positive, inclusive messages. One of the early speakers later explained that she and others left the rally when she heard the anti-Semitic remarks. Clearly it would have been better for her to make her opposition known more vocally rather than quietly leaving, but I can understand not wanting to get into a public tussle with the NOI.

The Nation of Islam speaker was unequivocally anti-Semitic. Moreover, I have seen the video and Lopez did not flinch at the remarks. He didn't react at all in fact. This is inexcusable. Elisa Silverman is a great Council Member for whom I have tremendous respect. Moreover, she has attempted to steer a middle ground in the controversy surrounding White and has had considerable patience with him. Her message that the District must reevaluate its relationship with the Nation of Islam is correct, as the NOI member made abundantly clear.

It is unconscionable that White has remained quiet about this to this point (at least as far as I can tell and I follow him on Twitter). If he can't come to the defense of his colleague and condemn clearly anti-Semitic remarks, he will have crossed a line regarding anti-Semitism in my mind.

Oh, you're new here! We have a long history of being ok with local politicians being completely ape shit criminals, but as long as they're from the neighborhood, it's fine, and in fact a point of pride. We love Marion Berry but kicked out Adrian Fenty, our first white mayor.

In broad strokes, chocolate city is run by locals (read: black). The transient rich people (read: white) end up moving back to Ohio or to Bethesda, Silver Spring, etc. So politicans like Trayon don't get pushed out.

This is changing. I think my kids' generation will have a more diverse city council, since there are many types of kids growing up in DC now-- white, black, rich, poor. In my generation anyone who had any means (no matter your race) fled bc of the crack epedemic and riots. Now there are lots of reasons to stay in DC so people with choice stay here. But these changes are fraught around race, gentrification, education, all those fun things with no good answers. My family came over in the late 1800s and every generation since has lived in the DC border except my generation, the siblings and cousins born between 1975-1990 or so, due to what DC was going through. However, now we're back on this side of Western Ave w our kids and thriving. My parents neighborhood was Petworth.

I do not seen Trayon losing his spot on the DC Council. Maybe if kojo nnamdi starts calling for it-- he seems to be a good source of shaming that folks will listen to.

Do you know that the DC Council has a majority of white members (and that excludes the two Council Members named "White"). So much for the "locals" running the city being black. I have known Adrian Fenty for a long time and never once heard him describe himself as white. Kojo Nnamdi has little influence in Ward 8. If anything, being attacked by Kojo would make White more popular to his constituents.
Adrian Fenty is not white. Adrian Fenty did some good things but he hired an inept education chancellor and he deserved to be voted out. He was a tone deaf mayor.

Please, let's not...

An appropriate reprimand for using taxpayer funds to support one of the country's most virulent anti-Semites would be termination. You're welcome.

Breaking news : if I didn’t call you the term you just employed it’s because you’re not one . Sooner ( I hope real soon ) people like you grow the intellectuals balls that allow you to know that some of us are well capable of having disagreements with people who happen to be Jewish without being anti Semite .

Did white donate to NOI? Recently? Or when? Sorry - I missed the details in that. Is there a way for the council to impeach him?

February, according to reports.

And no, the Council is not going to impeach him.
