What if the survey results show majority of people don't want to start earlier in August? Will he listen or does he do what he wants? I'm genuinely curious.

Theoretically, it is up to the board to decide, not Taylor. If the survey reveals the majority doesn't want the early start, they have the ability to go with another option. Now, will they exercise that option in reality? Not likely.

They are banking on a huge outcry that forces the union to give up grading days. Union should call TT's bluff. Changing the start of preservice to a time when many teachers will be unable to make it is unworkable and will result in a chaotic start to the school year. MCEA should let TT own that mess.

Survey may say people like the earlier start date. Every high school parent I know thinks the earlier start is a good thing. Kids in AP classes were really at a disadvantage this year with MCPS closed for so many days during a critical period.

Every elementary school parent I know is against an earlier start date with so little notice

If your kid doesn't pass the AP test because they missed 5 45 minute classes, they were never going to pass to begin with. PERIOD.

My kids APES has not even started Unit 9 yet. Test is May 15. It's listed as one of the heaviest units on the exam. Luckily it will be fresh but I'm not sure how much content is really being absorbed.

I am a HS parent and would support an earlier start date for the 2027-2028 calendar, but not for the 2026-2027 school year. It is too late to change it for families and teachers.

^^ This. If school starts on Aug. 20 my kids will simply miss those days. We booked our summer trip once the schedule (we thought) was finalized, including getting time off work.

And I imagine a lot of other kids will miss it too.

They have only allotted 5 minutes on the agenda for this on Thursday. Maybe they really are planning on going ahead with starting the year earlier? You'd think if they were going to change their recommendation they would give more time for a presentation about it...

Unless MCEA pushes TT back seriously and firmly, It will be Option 1. TT never bend for BS survey results or any other organizations, including BOE.

Not every HS parents want early start date. We can do it next year with well advanced notice. We cannot do it this year. Many HS kids had already signed contracts for internship, apprenticeship, or work (e.g., pool life guard). They cannot break their contracts easily and it doesn't worth to do so. Beside, HS years are really exhaustive. On top of working the entire summer, I think my HS kid well worths a short break.

This board is nothing but a rubber stamp. We need to vote them all out.

Please don’t just rely on the survey to let your opinion be known! Write to Taylor and the BOE too.

That doesn't work when good candidates don't run.

Who knows what they will do. Maybe MCEA is calling Taylor's bluff which I support. If your kid misses the first two days of school, it will be fine, hardly catastrophic if not ideal. I assume it will be worse for the teachers to have kids slowly streaming in the first 3 days of school. Seems like this will mean starting off with 2 fewer days of actual instruction. If teachers miss 3 days of preservice, I feel for them and hope they don't lose leave days because of it. Taylor and the BOE have done a lot of stupid things, this is one on a very long list of them.

Of course they will have to take leave if they don’t show up for work.
