Where can someone get help with their resume ?
Do I have to pay to go to the government center? I am willing to pay someone to help me not but not google because 99% of those websites are not from the USA..... |
| If you have specific questions and post language, we will help you. |

I was interested to learn of the opening for a Senior Manager at XYZ, I wanted to reach out to you directly to familiarize you with my background.
I can just tell that this needs work and I hate hate hate it. |
This is cover letter language. There's nothing wrong with it although you need to break it up into two sentences. |
| If you went to college, usually the Alumni/Careers office will help with this. Otherwise in Arlington, there is an employment center https://aec.arlingtonva.us/ Perhaps where you live also has something similar? |

NP here. Sweet. Smart ladies of DCUM are helpful

"I am interested in the position of Senior Manager at XYZ. My past experience working on Project X at Company Z mean that I can bring unique skills and knowledge to help you achieve your goals." Say "I am interested" not "I was interested". More active and engaged. As a hiring manager, if you tell me you want familiarize me with anything, I am going to familiarize your resume with my trash can. Talk about how you can help me, not why I should be more familiar with your background. What else you got?

The government office that does career counseling/resume reviews, etc will look at your resume thoroughly, for free. I walked away on cloud nine after a great experience from the Arlington Employment Center. You can walk in for advice no matter where you live. And if you live in the county, then you can get some serious one-on-one job search help.

Recruiter here. YES.. agree with the above. But, you should also tell them WHY you like the company and want to work for them (don't make it just about your skills). Reference anything you've read about them that makes you attracted to working for them whether it's a current press release that caught your attention, a product you admire, a positive review on glassdoor, etc. This will show you've done your research and have a genuine interest. Then tie that into your previous experience and HOW you can help them. |
| Ultimately, your resume is going to get you in the door. I spend about .5 seconds reading a cover letter. If it makes grammatical sense and is legible, it's fine. It's the resume you need to polish. |
Totally agree with this. I work at a non-profit, on a pretty widely respected cause and it's amazing how many people don't reference the issue we work on in their cover letter. It's so easy to do. |
