I was interested to learn of the opening for a Senior Manager at XYZ, I wanted to reach out to you directly to familiarize you with my background.
"I am interested in the position of Senior Manager at XYZ. My past experience working on Project X at Company Z mean that I can bring unique skills and knowledge to help you achieve your goals." Say "I am interested" not "I was interested". More active and engaged. As a hiring manager, if you tell me you want familiarize me with anything, I am going to familiarize your resume with my trash can. Talk about how you can help me, not why I should be more familiar with your background. What else you got? :)
Recruiter here. YES.. agree with the above. But, you should also tell them WHY you like the company and want to work for them (don't make it just about your skills). Reference anything you've read about them that makes you attracted to working for them whether it's a current press release that caught your attention, a product you admire, a positive review on glassdoor, etc. This will show you've done your research and have a genuine interest. Then tie that into your previous experience and HOW you can help them.
