Terrible Cough, but Want to Work Out

Anonymous
I have had a horrible cold for the last week. I think it is mostly cleared up, but I am left with a terrible, hacking cough that is clearly working to clear out my lungs. However, it is so bad that I have almost felt nauseous after one coughing bout and can actually clear a room of people when I start in because I swear they think I have the plague. I haven't worked out in over a week, and it is getting to me. When can I get back to the gym in spite o my cough?

Well it's true. Your cough is spewing germs all over the place which will make lots of other people sick.

Do stuff at home or run outside or something. I would be mad if someone was at the gym coughing that much.

OP, I've followed the neck rule for working out and illness for over 25 years and it hasn't steered me wrong. If symptoms are above the neck, it's fine to work out. So, no go on a chest cough.

And definitely don't go to the gym when you're that sick. Please.

Don't go to the gym, or an indoor studio. Don't be that jerk.

Agree with others - if you can workout outside or at home, do so at your own level and risk.

But it's not fair to knowingly cough your germs onto others.

Dude, this isn't a topic where people really need to have compassion. It's not like you confessed you were abused as a child or that you have a terminal illness. The cough medicine might be making you a bit loopy.

Seriously?! What did you expect to hear? Only a jackass would go to a public gym and spew phlegm all over others

Wow, you're a special kind of snowflake, aren't you, op?

OP, the droplets from a cough or sneeze travel in the air 18 to 24 feet at a speed of up to an astounding 100 mph. It makes sense to stay home until you are no longer coughing. Thank you from the rest of us and we all hope you are feeling better soon!

My point was not about going to a public gym but just whetherbI can workmout. But I guess since I am expected to be at work despite the cough and I take public transit to work I am a jerk.
