If you are out there in DCUM-land, what has your student experienced or observed on campus with respect to openness to, or at least tolerance of, conservative opinions? |
What schools do you have in mind? |
What we define as "conservative opinions" today are very rare on college campuses or university towns and always have been. Intellectuals, historically, have always been liberal thinkers.
That said, a good person will be accepted by good people anywhere. If your kid is a bigot, like so many Conservatives, he will likely have a very difficult time in college. |
Wow, this poster sounds just like one of those idiots up at Middlebury that shouted down someone who had a view they disagreed with..... to the original poster without the bigotry comments, its all about tolerance and how your DC can deal with opposing views. Our DC went to a fairly liberal college and did quite well without the need to shout down the speakers with whom DC disagreed. DC was not a conservative in liberal disguise, but instead an independent. Good luck. |
+1 |
Even very liberal campuses, as long as they are large enough, tend to have conservative groups, conservative papers, etc. on them so if your child is the type to actively go and seek out groups and activities s/he should be fine. My campus was very liberal but the conservative types there were very happy as long as they were the type that were okay joining a meeting of strangers and introducing themselves. |
If your son has strong opinions, of whatever the variety, I would just make sure to send him somewhere big enough to have all opinions reflected.
Yeah, the Middlebury kids were ridiculous, which would make me even less inclined to send a left-leaning kid there than a right-leaning kid. I wouldn't want opinions reinforced in a vacuum. |
It really depends on the university. There are conservative leaning campuses out there, usually the ones that are former agricultural schools in the south. |
Middlebury will never have trouble filling its classes with talented young people.
And it's stupid to think that that's the only campus where young people would've responded to Charles Murray like that. |
NP here, disagree that Middlebury is the rule rather than the exception. If one believes the media report (yea right!), the campus was notified ahead of time of the speaker; there were plenty of discussions held ahead of time. The demonstration was a deliberate attempt to cut off the speaker along with the conservative speaker. One has to look long and hard to find such preplanning. While it is true the school will fill the seats, it is also true we'll not take our DC to visit. Ultimately, we can't decide where DC will attend but we do plan on paying the bill. Enough said. |
Yes, an overpriced school for rejects of better schools will be ok. |
I agree with this 100%. "A good person will be accepted by good people." And universities and colleges have historically been liberal. Where are people finding fault with this post? Not all conservatives are bigots but all bigots are conservatives. |
This is sooo not true. - lifelong liberal |
My liberal DC attends Purdue and is finding many conservative students in his classes and on campus. It is big enough that he has found enough liberal leaning students. I would think the same would be true for and larger campuses- whether liberal or conservative leaning. Mitch Daniels is the President. |
Nope. There are bigots everywhere. And, there are anti-bigots everywhere. |
