Can we talk about how Emma Watson cannot act?

Anonymous
I have followed this young actor's career since she was cast as Hermione Granger in the Harry Potter movies and I must say I am quite flummoxed by the lack of criticism her inability to act seems to bring about. I cringe every time she is on screen. She seems to be quite intelligent and hard working; I can tell that she really tries. She just does not have it. She keeps raising her eyebrows with every other word that she says; hyperventilates repeatedly and speaks in a shrill, bossy, exasperated voice. Her range is so stilted and limited. She appears so obviously uncomfortable in her body its painful to watch.

Now when I heard she was cast as Belle, my heart sank. Belle is beautiful, smart and a Disney Princess! This poor girl will never be able to bring all of that onto the screen. It will be a mess.

I thought this review was spot on:

"Emma Watson is the real headliner here, and physically couldn’t have been more perfectly cast. But someone really should have screen-tested her before she signed on — with an actual green screen. There are actors who can conjure up a world around them on a blank soundstage and make us believe in it just with their eyes; Watson is not one of those actors. Watching her sing to the hills during the re-creation of the iconic “Belle (Reprise)” or wander through the ominous ruins of the castle’s west wing (not that one) I found myself distracted, wondering where she thought she was walking when she filmed it, what she thought she was looking at. Her singing voice could stand to add a little oomph, but it’s the least of the problems in a performance that mostly adds up as a collection of charming poses and furrowed eyebrows. But boy, does she look the part."

She really can't act and I agree she has no charisma. Her pass from negative commentary probably stems from the fact that she does seem nice and intelligent and she didn't fall into the child star trap.

I feel the same way about Natalie Portman. I feel like the world is playing a big joke on me, a la the Emperor's New Clothes. She cannot act at all and has zero charisma - but she has a beautiful face.

YES!!!!! I completely agree with you yet when I have expressed this opinion to people I get pushback. She is lovely but she cannot act!!! And I also agree with posters who say that Emma Watson can't act either.

I'm not familiar with Emma Watson's work but +100 to this one. I've seen 2 of the movies Natalie was nominated for an Academy Award and wasn't impressed with either - especially Closer, she was not believable at all in that role.

I've seen this criticism of her a lot actually, I'm surprised you haven't! For the record, I agree about her acting. I love HP though so I can't criticize her as Hermione

SAME! I agree on both of them. I'm so glad someone else is saying that about Natalie Portman. I've seen criticism about Emma Watson's acting ability elsewhere but I've never seen anything negative about Natalie Portman's ability. She. can't. act.

And along with all that missing talent, E. Watson was kicked off La La Land (opposite Miles Teller, also kicked off) for being too demanding. So with that average face and missing talent, she demanded herself right out of a (potential, at that time) Oscar-winning film. Maybe Beauty and the Beast will treat you like you deserve, right, Emma?

I agree with above ^^ PP. She really - at best - has an average face. She is far from beautiful. And her acting at best is horrid. I'm sure my 4-year-old could out act her.

We are going to conveniently miss Beauty and the Beast. There isn't enough alcohol in the world to make me sit through that.

YESSSSSSSSSS!!!! OMG, I've found my people. Natalie Portman is one of the most beautiful creatures I've ever laid eyes on, she honestly is. And intelligent, and probably a very nice person too. But she really can't act. I haven't seen "Jackie," but I was stunned to see her nominated for Best Actress. Maybe I'd feel differently if I saw the movie, maybe she does a fantastic job - but the trailers I've seen didn't impress me at all. Actually, I really did think she was superb in "Black Swan," and deserved that Oscar. But other than that, I agree, she is very flat in almost every role. But my goodness, what I wouldn't give to look like her.

(and same for Emma Watson)

Did anyone see "Cinderella" a few years ago, with Lily James? I absolutely loved that movie, and thought Lily James was perfectly cast. I'm wondering if I'll feel the same way about Emma Watson in Beauty and the Beast. I hope so - I love the remakes of all the classic fairytales. Also loved Lily Collins as Snow White (another beauty).

Omg I totally agree about Natalie Portman. I thought I was the only one.

Emma Watson can act when she has the right Director. She was hilarious in that movie about the home schooled girls who burgled Paris Hilton and Lindsay Lohan etc

I'm a PP (see: Watson kicked off La La Land). I love that you used 'burgled' instead of the awful, made-up Americanism 'burglarized.' I didn't see the movie you reference but maybe I will, now.
