Curious about SWW@St. Francis

What are the elementary feeders to SWW@St. Francis? For parents of students what are your experiences with the school and curriculum? Do you get preference to SWE HS? I'm the parent of a 5 year old and happy with our school but curious (Cleveland). Thanks!

It's SWW@Francis Stevens.

No preference to SWW high school but the same person is principal of both schools (yes that is weird).

Thank you.

Are you in Cleveland dual language?

If not, the main difference is how soon you are slated to go to Cardozo.

SWWFS parent here. While there is no preference to the high school, the common principal is working to adjust the middle school so that something like 30% of the 8th graders get into the high school in 5 years from now. I may have those numbers slightly incorrect. If your child has a supportive family / is reasonably motivated, going to SWWFS could help but no guarantees.

How? Establishing a preference or giving them coursework or inside information that helps them on the exam? That would be unfair and highly unethical. Of course the SWE admissions process lacks transparency that this probably can/will happen.

That whole HS school needs to be rethought.

They are really separate schools. The only things left from the merger is a shared name and principal. The latter is what needs to be corrected. The HS is application only, and there should be zero preference from any MS, even one that shares its name.

The 30% statement, which has been used since the "merger" is misleading. It is not a goal of 30% admission to the high school, but rather 30% eligible to take the test. Eligibility requires a certain GPA and standardized testing score. My understanding is that since the "merger" only a couple of FS kids have been admitted to the HS.

The improvement is visible. This change takes time to get teachers / programs in place and for kids to go through a couple years. Also, the school has a lot of OOB (lower SES). This is changing I've noticed the last 2 years and more IB kids stay. The school will be a good prep for a good shot at SWW HS, but we're a few years from that.

From what I understand the principal and staff are also very supportive of kids wanted to get into Ellington and McKinley. They're really trying to encourage the kids to do well so that they can follow the path that is right for them.

Eligibility for SWW is GPA only -- not PARCC or other standardized tests (obviously this could change in future).

You need a 3.0 in 'core' classes to apply to take the test. http://www.myschooldc.org/sites/default/files/u56/Applying%20to%20Selective%20Citywide%20HS%20Requirements_ENG%20%28v4_1.3.17%29.pdf

So the middle school is committing to grade inflation if necessary? And the MS principal can influence the HS interview process, because he's also the HS principal?

Sucks for kids at the other middle schools.

That's a serious accusation. Where are you getting this? No one has said that the kids at SWWFS have inflated grades. Just stop.

If the goal is to have 30% of the kids eligible to take the test, and eligibility to take the test depends solely on GPA, is it that far-fetched that the school would want kids to have high GPAs?

And since GPAs are solely within the control of teachers, might they not feel pressure to grade in accordance with the goal?

If pigs had wings, wouldn't they be able to fly? Come on. If you have proof of grade inflation, then please do not post such things.
