Again, I'll never go back to a therapist given my experience with her.

She had many clients who thought very highly of her and she did help a number of people but some of her work was extremely detrimental...and she wasn't licensed or trained. "Odyssey Journey" was an extremely expensive venture into mind control which she called holistic healing.

Was she even trained as a therapist?

No, she was not trained as a therapist. I went to see her after being one of her primary care patients at MGH and she "offered" me a more holistic approach to mental health and well-being. She had no boundaries and I was struggling with my marriage and she offered to treat me outside of her primary care practice at Mass General. She was a MGH physician and underscored her Harvard affiliations and she was caring...I wasn't in the mind space to think critically. And she was a physician who seemed to want to fix the system and help others. She did more damage to me and my marriage than I would have thought possible. Our marriage is healthy now but neither my husband nor I remember that time with Kathryn as therapeutic in any way.

hating on Hilaria... This entire thread is about Hilaria. If I didn't care about an issue, I wouldn't go on to that thread. So the people on this thread are either shaking our heads and marveling at her "chutzpah" and cluelessness and lies... or - and this is the only other choice -- PR people for Hilaria or her friends or Hilaria herself. Nobody is coming on here because they are not interested, and nobody can really defend her behavior.
If you are Team Hilaria (or Hilaria!) stop telling us not to write here. And stop pretending you're not invested in the story because why else would you be on this thread?!

DP. Yes, I think everyone understands it's a thread about Hilaria. Unfortunately, that doesn't mean that posters get to declare that's it "Hilaria haters only!!!". You might get some dissenting opinions, that's generally how forums work.

Kathryn was my therapist 2x/week for about a year before I left. I felt she was gunning for a high end clientele (ran the circuit of trying to get into exclusive clubs/gyms in Boston with her Mediterranean diet meal plan and energy medicine colleagues). She had a private practice out of her home in Beacon Hill and after less than one year, my husband said he thought she was detrimental to my psyche. She hired people whom she referred her clients to ("energy medicine gurus/medical intuitives") that were unfit to treat people as they had their own personal issues. Some of Kathryn's approaches were questionable and detrimental and also full of risks. I could go on but don't want to reflect back on that time...I do believe she meant well but her ego made her feel super-human. After 10 months I stopped therapy with her and felt free again. I had some issues to address but I'll never go back to a therapist based on my experience with her. My husband and I had a number of couples therapy sessions with her and at one point he said he never wanted to meet with her again. I agreed. Years later, our marriage is strong, we have a child, and our reflections of Kathryn are sadly similar but we persevered. Just some personal reflections...

I’m sorry you went through that experience. It sounds like it was confusing and harmful to your well-being. Thanks for sharing your insight. I think firsthand accounts are invaluable.

Practicing a form of medicine that you do not have training for is something worthy of filing a complaint with her licensing board, but since she's in Espana now it probably would not protect anyone else from her.

Except that the phone on their website is still a Massachusetts phone number, so presumably, the services are being offered to MA residents and others in the US.

To the poster trying to explain how forums work, I call BS. If you don't care either way, you don't comment. Or even go to a thread. Why come here if you don't care? Why comment? Because you do care because you are her friend or her pR person or Hilaria herself.

See what salma Hayek said on Marc Marin'a show. She said hilaria was going to Spain since she was 6 months old and her parents "still " live there and she isn't taking away any roles from Spanish actresses... she's a good friend. But she admits she is.

She is back to posting away, just no comments allowed. Alec hobbles a bit when playing with the kids. Is he OK? Knee issues?

I hope you don't mind the question as its anonymous here. How was Kathryn a "therapist" if she's not a mental health professional or psychiatrist? What kind of therapy was she practicing? What kind of risks are you referring to? Do you mean in terms of medication or in terms of foregoing medical treatments? I'm just curious as I'm trying to figure out what she was doing with her "oddysey journey" practice. Thanks for sharing what you have.

I'm sorry you had such a bad experience. Could you please elaborate a little bit? Like what opinions did she preach? How was her work detrimental? I've noticed a couple of doctors in the MDVIP program (concierge medicine) have these arrangements with other providers so that they send (wealthy) referrals back and forth to one another. I'm curious about how she included family systems or family issues into this "holistic" approach to health care.

To the poster who had K as a therapist - I’m sorry. To the above poster attempting to minimise the harm caused to vulnerable and needy patients by bad, lazy, unethical, ill-equipped, untrained, arrogant or boundary crossing therapists - shame on you. The damage from this kind of betrayal can be severe and further delay the patient getting the actual help they need.

It's hard to describe as it was a really vulnerable time for me and I felt like she was trying to make me make the decisions that SHE wanted me to make. My husband and I both felt like there was a third person in our marriage and when I told her that, she didn't feel that was a bad thing.

She was forceful about coming off all medication and big pharma being an evil empire. I get the concept but you can't force people to do things. Same with the Mediterranean diet (dairy is poison) and drinking wine (you have alcoholic tendencies)...everything was so dramatic and when I challenged or pushed back, she would step back and say something alluding to the fact that I could make my own choices and she'd be there when I got sick (liver failure from drinking and being on anti-anxiety meds) or my marriage failed (it's broken, I'll help you fix it). The only thing that describes it accurately is "mind f*ck." It was like she needed to be needed by her clients.

I became very dependent upon her and then my husband and I became uncomfortable with her approaches decided that therapy with her wasn't good for our marriage. We did figure things out and our marriage is strong years later but I will never seek out therapy again. It was a weirdly damaging experience because she never did anything outright "wrong" it was just a slow roll towards strongly influencing/controlling my decision-making by making fearful predictions.

She definitely did referrals to other alternative medicine practitioners. There were 2 practitioners that were truly amazing but there was 1 energy medicine "guru" who had more issues than I did and it was so disturbing.

Even writing this, it doesn't sound so damaging...but for some reason it was for me. One poster made a good point in that anyone can be a "life coach" but I think her being an MD made her feel like she could advise on everything. Boundary issues were the biggest issue for me and I stopped trusting myself to make any decisions until I became "free."

Though it led to sizeable harm.

That's quite an exaggeration as emotional work is nothing like cutting open the human body. It's not even illegal to do life coaching and it's certainly not illegal for a medical doctor to treat depression for instance with adjunct movement or talk therapies. Chiropractors do much worse. So it depends on what she was doing. Where do you get that what she was doing is illegal? Can you cite the law that makes it illegal?

Not the poster you are referring to, but you have to have the training and license to do therapy without supervision. However, you are right absolutely anyone can call themselves a "coach" and they don't even need some fake credential that you buy. They can also do harm and therefore can be sued. If the mother was sued for doing coaching or therapy, her malpractice insurance is not going to cover her because they only cover her for internal medicine. She can prescribe antidepressants as an internal medicine physician, but not do therapy. Coaching is not covered for malpractice either.

Agree, no evidence. I grew up in a middle eastern country. I have friends I still keep in contact with, report cards from the American school I attended and lots of pictures from my time there with family and friends. She has offered none of these from her time in Spain.

And I’m willing to bet that if someone questioned the time you spent there you’d have friends and family who would come to your defense. So far, only a doctored text from her brother has supported her claim.

Absolutely. Hilaria hasn't given any evidence that she has spent any significant time in Spain. She seems to have only superficial knowledge of the culture (paella, flamenco, fans)

Truly the Disney version of her beloved España.
