FCPS Boundary Review Updates

Both Dr. Reid and our school board rep had said at public meeting that the proposed map for our area is not what was supposed to happen, and that our school will likely move as a unit, not a split feeder as it has been on all the Thru maps.

If this is happening in one pyramid, it means it is happening everywhere. It also means Thru came up with different solutions than the ones the school board intended when they changed 8130, which might explain why Thru came up with making Hunt Valley a split feeder to SoCo (a better solution than to Lewis), instead of rezoning the entire school to Lewis like was on the leaked maps from last summer.

Based on the reactions this and last week from Dr. Reid and at least one school board rep, it appears that the summer maps are going to be a huge summer surprise and probably very different from the Thru maps so far.

Buckle up, parents. It is going to get worse.

I’ve heard the same. What will happen? Go back to the Lewis proposal or keep things as is? They can’t move the whole
HV to south county schools.

I’m sorry, I missed something. In WHICH public meeting was this mentioned? And about which school?

They maybe shrink their ambitions, but it’ll be really hard to expand the changes or pivot them from where they are to anything but the original pyramid.

Karl wants to be a politician, right? He won’t let Sandy do anything drastic to jeopardize that.

We were told by our school board representative that the social and emotional well-being of current students is not a primary consideration in determining new boundaries. FCPS is taking the long view.

We were also told that school diversity (whether racial/ethnic or socio-economic) is not a consideration except to the extent it may impact the county’s 4 identified priorities of proximity, enrollment and capacity, access to programming, and transportation.

Which school board member said this? Can teachers and school staff say this as well since it comes from the top?

She alluded to that in a meeting with HV families.

How is Thru making any money on this contract? Their people don't live in town but the project manager has to keep coming to town for all of these public meetings. Presumably FCPS is picking up the tab for that, in addition to their $500k? I'm in consulting and I can't see how they're making any profit on this project.

So they're doing a lousy job and upsetting many parents/students throughout the county with their protected maps and they're going to make little if any money on this contract? Woof.

There was a FCPS planning meeting this week with Reid, and several smaller meeting online with school board reps. People emailing school board reps. A high school PTA meeting featuring 2 school board reps.

What came out in those meetings is:

No grandfathering high schools so they can rezone students from other schools into those spots.

The proposed split feeder in our pyramid was not supposed to be a split feeder. The original plan was to rezone the entire school as a single entity, not a new split feeder.

Checking residency before rezoning is too much work, even though they are aware that residency fraud might be skewing the capacity numbers, so FCPS will keep the current honor system that brought us Hayfield football.

People are asking questions, and are getting slip of tongue answers from fcps leadership that are likely honest answers they weren't intending to share.

NOT meetings with school board reps. The meetings were with communities getting rezoned. The HOAs are setting them up.

I’m not sure how Sandy will be able to get the rest of the sb members on her side. She’s been leading the charge, and I’ve heard others on the school board are tired of dealing with this issue. Hard to see them going bigger at this point when all they want is to never have to deal with boundaries again.

People are getting intelligence where they can, since this process is so drawn out and flawed. Reid talks to people during these public meetings and people are picking up some stuff from her and others there, since the local school board rep often shows up. And school board members are talking to HOAs and neighborhoods when invited where sometimes they let stuff slip. It's just really maddening.

I'm sorry, but the Thru proposals that are online now, while certainly subject to later revision, are the only thing one can assume reflects the latest thinking. I don't care what Sandy Anderson may be telling people on the side. She doesn't have much credibility and, in any event, there have regularly been people coming on here and posting false information that aligns more closely with their own preferences. Especially insofar as it relates to West Springfield.

I think it's mostly just one person who is very online in this forum and very vocal.

What’s the outlook for western Great Falls? I haven’t kept up with the debate, but I recall there was concern that homes west of Springvale could be rezoned to Herndon HS. At this point, how likely is that?
