We aren't interested in having a birthday party for DD at a 'place' but rather have a few of her friends over at our home. The OCD in me knows I need to stay in my lane and not have chaos in my house...maybe it would be structured, like 'stations' that my older kids and husband and I can help with? Any fun ideas? It will be all girls. Cupcake decorating? It will likely still be a bit cold outside so sprinkler is out. |
hahaha.... I was going to suggest on of those companies that comes and brings laser tag equipment, then read it was all girls. Probably not such a big hit. |
I just did this for the same bday--7th.
We did: 1) painting flower pots (from oriental trading) with acrylic paints (washable!) 2) treasure hunt around the house in one big group. Had the kids take turns reading the clues. You can get clues online on pinterest. 3) played hot potato -- but whoever was caught holding the bag when the music stopped got to pick a prize out of the bag before getting "out." 4) Had tea party with sandwiches, lemonade and hot chocolate + cake 5) Let the birthday girl open her presents in front of the guests...THAT WAS THE BIG HIT! I don't know why we all stopped doing this in the last 30 years, but I'm reintroducing this tradition. Everyone so loved seeing their friend open their stuff! = 2 hours. |
My girls have been to a couple of paining parties around that age--you can get packs of canvasses and paints at Michaels. |

10:08 here. Forgot to add Legos. |
We just did this! We went old-school and played hot potato, pin the tail on the donkey, and had a piƱata. The kids also listened to music in DDs room and just hung out. |
This list is amazing! Thank you DCUM! |
Old school party games have been a hit at our home parties. Does your daughter have a particular theme she is interested in? It's often easy to think of games or activities around a theme. These are some of my favorites from both my kids and my own childhood:
- Pass the Present (kids sit in a circle, and pass a gift. When the music stops, whoever is holding it gets to unwrap a layer of paper. Small prizes are hid in some of the layers, with a slightly bigger prize for whoever opens the last layer. - Balloon Pop (put a happy or sad face on a piece of paper inside a balloon and blow it up. each child has to try to pop their balloon however they can using their body. it's hysterical. kids with a happy face get a small prize) - Pinata - Obstacle course races, balancing an egg on a spoon, etc - Cupcake decorating or cookie painting - Treasure Hunt - Freeze dance or musical chairs |
I would add in a movie - they can watch and craft at the same time. |
We just went to a party like this, but there were a few other games that were big hits: Kids split up into two teams, and the parents had set up a full set of clothes at one end (pants, shirt, scarf, hat, gloves) - it was a relay race to dress and undress (on top of their clothes, of course!) The kids thought it was HILARIOUS. For the gift giving, they did a version of spin the bottle. Whomever the bottle landed on gave their gift to the birthday boy for opening. This worked because there were only 7 guests. Instead of balancing an egg on a spoon, the birthday mom made a carrier out of a paper plate and popsicle stick, and the kids carried a balloon in a relay. |
We just went to a home party where the parents had hired a face painter. Huge hit, and the kids all patiently waited their turn. |
Fine as an add on, but it doesn't entertain them. They spend whole time waiting in line, nothing entertaining about that. |
We had a home party when my son turned 7. Mostly the kids just wanted to play and didn't have much interest in planned activities. |
