| When are these typically taught? I was surprised when my second grader said they haven't covered this in school yet. In what grade did your child's school teach this? |
| My experience in MCPS is that grammar comes mainly from teachers who teach it on their own ouside of the main curriculum. If your child gets one of these gems, count your blessings. In the meantime, I'd recommend Madlibs. |
| They are not doing it in second. We work on it at home. |
|
I'll second Madlibs.
Tho I was in kindergarten the other day and they were talking about adjectives and what they do. |
| Parts of speech are indicators in the writing curriculum in 1st grade. They learn nouns, proper nouns, verbs & adjectives. Adverbs are introduced in 2nd grade. |

| Thanks, everyone. I guess it's possible they covered it last year and he forgot (we are not in MCPS). We do Madlibs, and I've explained the basics at home. I was just curious about the school component. |
They have not in our second grade. |
| You have to send your kid to Catholic school to get decent grammar and writing instruction. |
| First grade normally. |
| MCPS curriculum 2.0 guide for first grade mentions that it's covered there. |
This. Public schools no longer believe in explicitly teaching grammar. I teach my kids at home with a homeschool grammar book. |
| 9:46 here. My son does grammar and vocabulary 2-3 days per week in his 6th grade class at a Catholic school. I am very happy they spend so much time on this because it shows in their writing. They really beat the reading strategies to death in public school. |

It's possible the teacher covered it for a minutes for a few days but look at the amount of stuff we want our kids to learn. They will not remember it unless you diligently further explain and reinforce it at home.
And if your child did not pay attention during the lesson, he will definitely not remember what was covered. They will tell you, something about nouns and that's it. The teacher is not suppose to be the only one teaching your kids. Parents have responsibilities to make sure what was taught is repeated at some capacity at home. |
I was going to say that my 1st and 3rd graders are both learning it in Language Arts, but they're in a Catholic school, so I guess that tracks with this. I didn't know it wasn't universally standard to teach it anymore. |
