Parts of speech

And if your child did not pay attention during the lesson, he will definitely not remember what was covered. They will tell you, something about nouns and that's it.

The teacher is not suppose to be the only one teaching your kids. Parents have responsibilities to make sure what was taught is repeated at some capacity at home.

OP here. I certainly don't expect schools to teach everything and in fact teach my kids all sorts of things. I would have expected grammar to be taught in school, but I'm happy to teach him instead if it's not taught/emphasized.

Looks like it's a third grade standard under common core:

My kids covered grammar during English Language Arts in DCPS. It was not a specific "class" with a grammar book, but starting in K and all the up through middle school it was a part of what they were learning in writing instruction. They know the parts of speech and proper punctuation and usage, etc. Plus they have foreign language class at school too (weekly until 5th ES and daily from 6th on) and that also includes grammar.
