If DC is a sanctuary city, could the federal government

payments be halted completely? As in the money paid to cover use of trash system, fire services etc which the federal government provides since so much property is untaxed?

DC is a sanctuary and no mandated funds can be cut off. Potentially, a few grants could be lost.

since DC has no real autonomy, can the federal gov't dictate that it is NOT allowed to be a sanctuary city?

Now that is one pissing match it would be fun to see Trump lose. How does the president plan to ensure that a City where only 4% of the residents voted for him checks the immigration status of everyone the police stop for a traffic citation or who interacts with the school system or the municipal government in some way? As opposed to saying sure we did that, and then ignoring him. That's a lot of Feds (who hate Trump) micromanaging and overseeing a lot of bureaucrats (who also hate Trump). Sure Trump-- or Congress for that matter, can tell D.C. to shape up. In practice, 96% of D.C. (And probably 99% of municipal employees) will enjoy giving Trump the middle finger, however they feel about immigrants.

I'm annoyed the mayor is setting aside so much money for illegal immigrant legal fees. What is this magic bucket of money the council.and mayor keep dipping into?.

I am trying to reconcile Trump's promise to end the carnage in inner cities with cutting off funds to sanctuary cities.

(Said with a straight face).

Here's an idea : Lower taxes in DC and have a check box to voluntarily donate to the Mayors illegal immigrant defense fund. Also wondering how all the federal and city grants to the non profit service providers that primarily serve illegal immigrants (many clustered in Columbia Heights) will be affected.

#notmymayor #notmycouncil (just having fun. )

....or you can just move to Virginia and not have to deal with this. This is OUR town....get used to it. When it comes to compassion for our fellow man, Washingtonians are where the rubber meets the road.

We don't give a crap how much you paid for your Shaw shitbox. You're in the 4% and that ain't ever changing.

Alternatively I could stay in my hometown, where i was born, and voice an opinion about how my tax dollars are spent. And YOU could move to san Francisco where you would be welcome. Take the Council with you, thanks.

The certainty that the Council has really never met a tax increase it didn't like. You know what they'll do to cover any federal funding shortfall.

Do you live in DC?

I am in Alexandria which is a sanctuary city as well. I would totally support DC residents in opposition to Congress pulling funds. Just because I live across the bridge doesn't mean I don't care.

A memorandum dated January 25th is circulating around from Congress to the Mayor indicating that's breaking federal law.

I'd just love to get my hands on the magic cooking pot of money the Mayor and Council keep dipping into. Why shouldn't the federal government hold back funds if we have so much of our own?

this, Lets see, Grosso wants all bus rides to be free so DC can now fuurther subsidize non dc residents. Gray is proposing DOUBLING the salary of cops retiring to get them to stay on. Cause paying 200k for a 55 year old cop is a much better investment then recruiting new younger talent.
the one good thing Trump could do? Turn DC into a tax haven. No federal taxes. I would gladly get over voting rights or statehood for that perk.
