If DC is a sanctuary city, could the federal government

I live in Alexandria and suprisingly Alexandria is not a Sanctuary city.

Most of the money used to cover city services come from property and sales taxes. DC doesn't need any funds from some congressional district in flyover country.

You don't know what you're talking about. Something like 40% of DC's budget comes from direct federal payments and services. Fancy paying for a tax increase to cover that shortfall?

The certainty that the Council has really never met a tax increase it didn't like. You know what they'll do to cover any federal funding shortfall.

this, Lets see, Grosso wants all bus rides to be free so DC can now fuurther subsidize non dc residents. Gray is proposing DOUBLING the salary of cops retiring to get them to stay on. Cause paying 200k for a 55 year old cop is a much better investment then recruiting new younger talent.
the one good thing Trump could do? Turn DC into a tax haven. No federal taxes. I would gladly get over voting rights or statehood for that perk.

Not to mention that a 55-year old cop is likely to be in Gray's DC political base. A 25-year old, just out of the Armed Services police recruit, not so much.

If you live in DC, particularly west of the Anacostia River, the magic cooking pot of money that they are eyeing is otherwise called your wallet.

I don't personally want my tax dollars paying for an illegal fund proposed by people who refer to most of America as "flyover country". This seems very urban prejudiced and I don't need my money supporting that world view, thanks.

Now that is one pissing match it would be fun to see Trump lose. How does the president plan to ensure that a City where only 4% of the residents voted for him checks the immigration status of everyone the police stop for a traffic citation or who interacts with the school system or the municipal government in some way? As opposed to saying sure we did that, and then ignoring him. That's a lot of Feds (who hate Trump) micromanaging and overseeing a lot of bureaucrats (who also hate Trump). Sure Trump-- or Congress for that matter, can tell D.C. to shape up. In practice, 96% of D.C. (And probably 99% of municipal employees) will enjoy giving Trump the middle finger, however they feel about immigrants.

I think you are totally right. Interestingly, though, maybe five years ago, DC's police spokesperson told me that they DO check the immigration status not only of the people they take in, but also of the people who come to them for help. This was even after declaring DC a sanctuary city. I checked this with them multiple times just to make sure I'd understood right.

This was, like I said, a while ago - I don't know what they are doing now.

Actually, I was listening to the Kojo show on Friday and the increase for Police Officers actually makes sense. They are losing droves of officers to retirement and they can't hire them fast enough. They are trying. They've even opened a high school academy, but I believe you need a college degree here. Other jurisdictions are in the same boat. Because it's more expensive to train new ones, they would pay officers to stay an additional 5 years and they would get the increase in the 5th year. Officers retire with 75% of their pay so there is no reason for them to stay. Also, they can go to the feds after retirement, which is what many of them do.

Seriously? You are so dumb. Most of our cops live in surrounding jurisdictions. They can't afford to live in the city.

PP here. Just saw the stat. Less than 20% of our officers live in the city.

Let's strip the $30 million tax subsidy Trump received for rehabbing the Old Post Office and collect the property taxes he owes.

Is that what your ancestors said to "colored people" in your neighborhood?
