I knew it was common on kids menus because when our kids were little they were plain eaters. Growing up it was routine that some kids would eat it that way. I do think kids eat way more food than 30 years ago, maybe that’s why people are amazed that they would have only one item for lunch. Lunch! |
| Buttered pasta is for picky eaters. I view pasta as a side dish, not a main meal. I don’t care for pasta as a main meal. I want some kind of sandwhich/chips for lunch. Think Panera. |
The good thing about Panera is you can get 1/2 sandwich and 1/2 soup or salad or pasta. A variety but not huge portions. |
it’s ironic that people saying they would hate just pasta for lunch are raving about of all things…Panera. What a twist. |
Haha I had the same thought. Panera is so bad I can't even eat it now. I would rather just eat egg noodles with some butter and a sprinkle of salt. |

I am sure everyone would like to eat elaborate delicious meals if someone serves it to them. Therefore, what's the point of mocking someone who is eating poverty-food? If they could eat better, they would.
I guess the problem is when they serve you that food. If you have a choice, you can turn them down. |

If kids eat it at Old Ebbit it is no t poverty food. Stop calling it that. Insecure much?
Chips are junk calories. And salt. This thread inspired me to serve buttered farfalle with our brisket. DH loves it. |
yup. I would say Panera is pretty much trash. Buttered noodles are simple and delicious. Healthy? Well, not the healthiest obviously but there are many worse things. |
A tiny amount of kids are eating unsweetened rice milk and cottage cheese followed by tofu, seed bread and water for lunch. Real butter has been a staple since before people started to eat huge portions of food. It’s not unhealthy. Neither is pasta. Whole-grain pasta is healthy. It’s the ridiculous amount of food people eat that’s unhealthy. A small bowl of pasta at lunch is more than enough food. |
Exactly- a sandwich and chips plus no veggies is super weird! You should always get a soup or salad rather than a big carb/fat/salt bomb of salad and chips, that's even worse than the pasta OP served. SOme of you need nutrition 101. |
| People are too complicated and rarely happy. I've had people mind carbs, mind a vegan dish made with their preferences in mind, reject the most common foods, reject a salad...So I only keep food hosting to an absolute minimum with family. |
Why are you being extra and serving brisket? Give just the buttered farfalle to your DH!! What a weird humble brag in support of depression-era subsistence food!! Show-off! Bloody Gourmands!!

No one is going to Old Ebbit to just eat buttered noodles. They might choose it as a side dish, but they came for the steak or the seafood. Or they came because someone else wanted the steak or seafood, and they either wanted their company or were too young to stay alone, and they are picky or allergic and buttered noodles are the only thing they like on the menu. In that context, it's not poverty food. |
