NP but there is no evidence that DCPS 5th grade and middle schools would support high fliers if they stayed. That’s why so many go charter. The academics and behavior are just not up to many parents standards. |
You're painting with too broad a brush. Our DCPS ES has clearly upped its game in the past decade to cater to IB families who stay. Sounds like you didn't stay for 5th. Also, Stuart Hobson offers much more advanced math and somewhat more advanced English than it did a decade back to serve IB families with kids who work at or above grade level.
It's not that nothing changes in DCPS to serve high fliers, it's that enough doesn't change (still no academic tracking for science or social studies). Charters have their own problems, often including weak facilities and subpar teacher pay/higher turnover than the better ES and MS DCPS programs. |
You can call it whatever you want and DCPS is notorious for this with “advance” or “honors”. It’s just grade level and far from advance. Also I heard that the grade level English is gone since Covid. Grade level should be the baseline, not the top and shows just how low the standards are in the system. |
Looks like Basis is eyeing 300 I St NE for elementary campus. Not sure how that will enable facility sharing with middle/high school campus.

Hm... so it's basically an office space. It does not look very large, and it's not near any significant playground space at all. https://www.commercialcafe.com/commercial-property/us/dc/washington/300-i-street-ne/ |
Wow. Does it have a courtyard that could be used as a playground?
Hill parents should be worried. This will pull a lot of JO, Miner and possibly Ludlow parents away from their IB school. Also, why is Alex Rose presenting to the ANC? So much for not pulling away resources from the current school (which the BASIS board promised they wouldn't do). |
Ugh. So like 2 blocks from CHML and 4 from JOW and right near L-T and 2R? Close to SWS too. No. This is absolutely not an area in need of another school in this area — this would be like 8 schools in an area where NW would have 1. It’s absurd. L-T already has 2 DCPS schools in its IB and now there might be another school one block outside it? And at least L-T has momentum. JOW has zero chance if this is approved. |
^^ And all of this is ultimately a DCPS failure, because parents will be picking the school for the MS feed, not because they actually prefer it to some of their Hill DCPS options for ES. |
maybe it will not be approved |
Not really understanding how this building is large enough, and it looks like the building pretty much covers the lot so no playground of any significance. Maybe they aren't planning on offering preschool? |
Exactly my thought! He said over and over again that a completely different set of people would be handling this expansion, and yet he’s making the presentation???? |
But where? There’s no buildings around there with outdoor space. The nearby daycares play on the sidewalk. Is that what BASIS is planning? Many of the mega office buildings downtown have large courtyard in the middle and large rooftop patios. So is the distance between 300 I street ne and the current campus what it’s like at every BASIS split campus? |

So is the distance between 300 I street ne and the current campus what it’s like at every BASIS split campus? Nope. Looks like they’ve sold current parents a laundry list of lies. All different people? Ha. Current students could use the facilities? Ha. |
Gee, maybe parents actually want BASIS for K-4? Every BASIS school in the world except for the one in DC includes K-4. There is no logical reason for opposing expansion here. |
