Pay 1/2 or 1/3?

I recently went on a trip with my sister and 16 year-old niece. The hotel room bill was $1,000. I slept on the sofa bed. Should I pay 1/3 of the hotel bill or 1/2? Not sure what is appropriate. We had no pre-trip discussions on who would pay what.

1/3, especially if they took the bed. Maybe more, but not 1/2 given there are two of them.

Offer 1/2. If she accepts, then you know how things would be for any next time. Obviously you think maybe you should pay less - so if she offers that arrangement, take it immediately - don't go back-and-forth

Offer 1/2 and expect her to say 1/3. But be prepared to go halves but Id be surprised if she wouldn't rebuttal with 33 percent.

Why didn't you get a bed and either the 16yo on the sofa or the mom and daughter share a bed? Why didn't you discuss sleeping arrangements and payment BEFORE the trip?

But your sister may suggest 1/2, in which case, don't let resentment brew, but be prepared for this arrangement to be set going forward.

If you owe your sister money, ask "what do I owe you" and go from there.

Did your niece staying in the room cost you more than if it was just the two of you? If so, your sister should pay the extra fee plus half of the balance. The same goes for any other per person expense.

Was there only 1 bed in the room, that they shared, leaving you the sofa bed? If so, you pay 1/2.

I don't think this matters. If mom and 16 year old shared a bed (say, a king size) while OP auntie took the sofabed, I think OP should still pay 1/3. A 16 year old is still using the hotel room "stuff" - the bathroom, towels, TV, wifi, etc that probably aren't different than her mom or OP/aunt.

Agree, or one way to look at it is aunt costs them no more so Sister could pay full price.

Your sister should offer to pay 2/3. Especially since you didn't even get a BED.
