ISEE scores - all over the place

Anonymous
DD, applying to private school for 6th grade, took the ISEE because she isn't a risk taker and the "loose points for wrong answers" with the SSAT isn't a good fit.

We got her scores which were 95%, 86%, 55% and 30%.

SHe's a good all around student, had the lead in the school play, was a student director, plays sports and three instruments, has several community service activities, scored well above her school's average on the state assessment last year. Academically loves science.

I think her teacher recs were good but she is a shy student so shining in class is not that evident.

SHe's applying to a school outside the DMV area that gets 75-100 applications and accepts 20-25%.

Will that 30% sink her?

There's no way of knowing, especially if the school is outside the DMV area. It always depends on the school and what they are looking for.

Sounds similar to my son's scores a few years ago when he applied, although his highest score was in the upper 80s. When I looked at the scores, I realized his low score was the first section of the test so we concluded it was nerves. One of the ADs also mentioned that she thought that was the reason looking at his scores. She told me that the score would not disqualify a student if they were otherwise strong. .

Yes.

Our choice is a middle school at 200% capacity (yes, 1200 kids in a school build for 650 - they have 18 trailers, 100 girls on the badminton team.) or this private school.

Her 30% was the last section. She was probably fried.

What were his school choices/

My daughter had similar "across the board" scores last year in 5th grade, and she did not get admitted to the 1 school to which we applied. She had a tutor for the ISEE and had done practice tests on which she had done better, but then was all over the map on test day.

We are trying again this year. She took the SSAT and was consistently higher.

I recommend applying to several schools if you really want to make a move.

Wow, sounds like third world country. That is terrible.
