DD, applying to private school for 6th grade, took the ISEE because she isn't a risk taker and the "loose points for wrong answers" with the SSAT isn't a good fit. We got her scores which were 95%, 86%, 55% and 30%. SHe's a good all around student, had the lead in the school play, was a student director, plays sports and three instruments, has several community service activities, scored well above her school's average on the state assessment last year. Academically loves science. I think her teacher recs were good but she is a shy student so shining in class is not that evident. SHe's applying to a school outside the DMV area that gets 75-100 applications and accepts 20-25%. Will that 30% sink her?
Sounds similar to my son's scores a few years ago when he applied, although his highest score was in the upper 80s. When I looked at the scores, I realized his low score was the first section of the test so we concluded it was nerves. One of the ADs also mentioned that she thought that was the reason looking at his scores. She told me that the score would not disqualify a student if they were otherwise strong. .
Her 30% was the last section. She was probably fried.
