| I was leaving the house this morning and was about to grab my workout gear. Then it hit me - all the New Year's Resolution peeps would be out in full force this week. So I'll just work out at home in the evenings this week and go back to the gym next week after they've all broken their resolutions. |
| Happy new year to you too!! May you always be encouraging to others! |
|
lol. That's one of my pet peeves and fears too. That and when schools and colleges are out and all of the students are back.
But if you were leaving around now, 10ish, I imagine it wouldn't be that crowded? Because the majority of people should be at work? That used to be one of my favorites times to work out but peak times probably are different at every gym. |

yeah, it's going to be REALLY horrible for the next few weeks.
To the 1st responder - it's great that people are deciding to get in shape. But perhaps some of them could make that decision in February instead, or in March, or April? Do they all have to make that same cliche decision every year on 1/02? (not on 1/01, because you know, hangovers and football.) Because the rest of us are trying to go about our business, the same stuff we do EVERY DAY OF THE YEAR because we know this stuff is a marathon, not a sprint. We know that good habits are made by doing them over and over again, not for 3 weeks in January. It gets tiresome when a ton of people who don't really know gym etiquette flood in there, make it hard for everyone to get in a workout, and then disappear after 3 weeks, not to be seen again till next year. at the very least, some of the newbies could put down their damn cell phones once in awhile. It's frustrating to try to use the single machine of its kind in the entire gym when you've got some clueless person "resting" for 20 minutes between sets while they play on their phone. They could also arrive at a crowded yoga class a few minutes early instead of sauntering in 15-minutes late and expecting everyone to somehow make room. |
| In January I adjust my schedule a bit, it can be crazy busy. |
+1 Agree It's just like church - blissfully uncrowded on January 1. |
|
As some one that has rarely missed a gym morning for years I can't imagine ever not encouraging people to get in there and workout. So many of them are already nervous and intimidated and these attitudes just feed into it.
If it's a major issue for anyone then go at 5 am. I've never had a problem then! |
I don't think you need a physical workout; you need some spiritual and psychological healing. |
| It was bad in the equinox Bethesda locker room this weekend. It's not the extra crowds - people have a right to use the membership they're paying for. The issue is the bad etiquette in the locker room. There are only 2 large benches to each locker corral (each of which holds over a hundred lockers) at this location and some women take up an entire bench to themselves for a long time. Like, they pull out everything from their gym bag and cover the entire surface of the bench and then when they finally leave, they leave behind dirty towels and water bottles on the benches and floor - I guess for the staff to put away and clean? It's beyond rude. I don't even know if it's new people doing this or regulars but it's an issue that pops up from time to time at this location. Honestly, I almost wish theft were more of an issue there so that these assholes would think twice before leaving all their belongings out and unattended for 45 minutes at a stretch. |

OP here. I encourage all to make positive changes in their lives and truly hope that anyone embarking on a resolution to work out more sticks with it. My point is just that the gyms are overcrowded this week and those of us who are there the 51 other weeks of the year have to adjust to more people being around. The simple fact is that most of those in there this week will drop off within the next few weeks.
I don't have the luxury of going around 10 a.m. I'd been at work for a few hours when I wrote the post. |
| YEP. I worked at a 24 hour gym in Fairfax for several years and January, February, and even into March was hell. Resolutioners take up all the cardio machines. |

I've been obese, and credit my weightloss with getting into fitness. But it's still incredibly annoying after the New Year - it'd be less annoying if the newbies had better etiquette.
- don't hog up the good machines (like the fancier treadmills) if you're going to use them wrong, like hold on to the railings - don't use your cell phone chatting in the gym - don't just stand around - clean up after yourself - in classes, STAY IN YOUR SPOT. Pick a spot, and stay in it. Have a good sense of space. If you don't know how much space is needed, just ask. - show up on time Great job showing up to the gym - but exercise a little courtesy and common sense, in addition to your body. |
F.U. -Former gym, current fattie getting ready to head back to old gym. You have no idea what some else's circumstances are. FWIW I was so avid I worked out before thanksgiving dinner most years. Having a baby blew apart my schedule. Trying to ease our kid into daycare so I can get back in track. Will be sure to not work in....eye roll |
Bitch. |
| I hear ya Op. I feel the same way about runners. I run outside daily , in all the elements, and it drives me insane when the new year resolutions folks hit the same trail - no etiquette, wearing their over priced athletic wear, total novices bc they are over dressed (ear muffs, really?/Jacket and long sleeve shirt, cmon?), and hogging up the trail/sidewalk by leisurely running in the middle, and busy checking their music play list not to notice others around them. Do they not realize what cheeseballs they are? |
