1) Kate is recovering from a serious abdominal surgery. KP wouldn't have announced such unglamorous news were it not the case. If they wanted an excuse for Kate being out of the public eye, they could've concocted something else.

2) Kate's condition may or may not be related to an ED. But there's no evidence that she's ever had a drinking problem!

3) Years ago, I believed the rumors that William had an affair with Rose. But after Pippa named her daughter Rose, this seems doubtful.

4) KP is not "soft launching" Rose. The reason The Independent ran the feature on Rose is because people are curious about her given the explosion of interest in William and Kate's marriage. Even if William and Rose were having an affair, I seriously doubt they would think now, while Kate is ill, is a good time to gin up some favorable press in William's mistress.

5) The photo of William and Kate in the car was exactly that. After the fiasco over the altered photo, do you really think KP would pull a stunt by having Pippa sit in for Kate in the "proof of life" photo?! Kate is almost certainly looking away from the camera because she is unwell and doesn't want to be photographed, which we already know.

6) KP said from the beginning that Kate would be off until sometime after Easter. So this is not unexpected.

7) The part that is peculiar is KP has not released any credible recent photos of Kate during her recovery, such as the obligatory "looking at well-wishers' cards" photo. This obviously indicates that Kate is feeling quite unwell, likely both physically and mentally.

8) But it does not suggest that Kate was in a coma! Just because Kate has a Spanish nanny doesn't mean that the Spanish reporter is correct. (Hey, I have British family and that doesn't make me an insider.) That reporter has written that Michael Jackson and Princess Diana were murdered...

TL;DR - We haven't seen Kate because she's feeling unwell, likely both mentally and physically. But some of the conspiracy theories are nutty.

Do you have a cite for that? I thought that was actually quite a recent development.

Yes. Official KP statement from Jan. 17. (I follow this stuff.)

Cool. I am actually reassured by that. It's less haphazard a progression than I thought.

It; 's a very good and clear statement. I just don't know where Or why it went off the rails. Like really off the rails, and it happened well before the picture gate.

Like how did this happen?

You are not using the phrase conspiracy theory correctly. Making conjectures is not conspiracy theorizing.

Okay, I'll clarify. Examples: Saying Kate may have an ED is conjecture. Saying that she's dead and KP staged a proof of life photo using Pippa as a stand-in is a conspiracy theory.

DP. I don't disagree with you but are a lot of people saying that it was Pippa in the car on Monday? I may have seen someone idly suggest that in an unserious way, but I don't think it's a prevailing theory. More people definitely (nonsensically) believe the Daily Mail or the photographer photoshopped Kate into that photo. Which is such a weird theory I won't even address all the reasons it doesn't make sense, but that's definitely a thing I've seen making the rounds.

A lot of people (me included) think it was Pippa in the car with Carole Middleton, because that woman looks just like Pippa (and does not look like Kate, really, except insofar as the sisters resemble each other) and also it would make perfect sense for Pippa to be in a car with her mom and less sense for Kate to be in the car, as Kate has a lot of security and less general freedom and is also I think at home recovering from some kind of medical issue. But that's not a conspiracy theory -- I just think that woman looks like Pippa not Kate. I don't think it means anything.

The woman in the car had Pippas entire jawline

Well they are sisters...

They have two entirely different shaped faces, it was not Kate. It was Pippa. Compare the jaw lines.

No offense, but the notion that KP would've staged a photo with Pippa pretending to be Kate is absurd. They faced enough backlash after the altered photo, why would they pull a far more outlandish stunt? And why would Pippa participate in such a cover up? It was Kate, but looking away from the camera because she is very ill.

We don’t know why she was looking away from the camera, but yeah, i agree it was her. It was the sign of life people were asking for.

It happened because KP started responding to gossip (the coma thing). I really don’t understand why they did that.

Why are people so certain that there are no marriage troubles? Marriage tension is incredibly common, particularly with kids that age, and the royal family is currently going through big transitions. And Kate has a big medical issue. It would be weird if there *weren’t* marriage troubles.

I also think it's possible that there are marriage troubles but what's silly is the speculation that surgery is a made up story to cover for a marriage breakdown. I do believe Kate is quite ill.

I know, right? It feels like there should be actual adults in charge of this, at this level, but it comes off like some inexperienced high schoolers who think they can wing it and get lucky. And it feels like there is a lot of weirdness to handle behind the scenes anyway, so it deserves the A Team (not the AV Club).

Oh, and I’ll add, it was a good and clear statement of their intentions, and then they went and did something completely different. They kept giving statements and a photo well before Easter.

I don’t understand that, either. But it definitely got everybody’s spidey senses tingling, and then they went on to release the fake photo, and it’s snowballed from there.

I absolutely believe she had surgery and is recovering. I am pretty iffy on the marital troubles rumors because a lot of it just sounds like the sort of stuff British tabloids make up to sell papers.

However I'm totally up in the air as to whether she is "quite ill" or not. The length of her recovery and the fact that they doctored up a photo and lied to say it was recent would indicate she is very ill. But everything the palace has said and done makes it sound like whatever's going on is more mild and not that big a deal -- maybe embarrassing but not life threatening. They have repeatedly reassured the public that she is recovering well, they only showed one person visiting her in the hospital one time. They claim she's up late messing around with photoshop and drafting Instagram comments. She's riding to an appointment with William wearing a full face of makeup. And William has skipped some stuff but they claimed the last minute missed memorial was unrelated, and he has joked about her and mentioned her in a casual way at some events (he has also indicated at other events that he is concerned about her, it's confusing). The messages are very mixed.

I don't get it because if she is quite ill, I could understand keeping it under wraps for the sake of the children. Completely. And for her privacy. But I don't get *hiding* the seriousness of it. Why not just say nothing and reply to requests for comment with some version of "this is a private family matter, we will update the public when it makes sense to do so, in the meantime please give the princess and her family the space you would afford any family dealing with a medical issue." Yes some people would speculate wildly online. But if they held that line, I think people would be respectful and, for the most part, patient. Who has not had a family member with a serious illness before? It can be a hard time and the prognosis can shift depending on treatments, and of course you'd want to protect the children.

Why go to such great lengths to make it seem like she's fine and going to be 100% soon. The photos, going out of their way to say Williams' schedule has nothing to do with her illness, etc. It seems like they don't want people to worry. Okay... but then why not just do a a little photo or video of her reading get well cards, or a short video of her for one of her charities? Why all the cloak and dagger?

It just doesn't make sense. I'm not going to speculate as to what her medical condition is or that it has anything to do with her marriage because I have no idea. But the reason I'm stuck on it is because it doesn't compute. My brain needs an explanation!

I wasn't referring to the TMZ photo. I am referring to the one that ran after the Mother's Day fiasco. The photo of Wiilian and Kate, where her head is turned away from the camera. KP tipped off a pap because they needed a proof of life photo. Photo ran in the Daily Mail.
