Do "believers" only believe because they are conforming? [ATHEISTS ONLY]

Anonymous
***This is a discussion just for atheists, so please do not chime in if you believe in religion/god(s).***

I was not brought up with any religion so I was never taught to believe in any particular god(s)/religion. From my observations, it does seem like most people who are brought up in families that practice even some limited amount of religion do end up practicing the same, or similar, religion. Are they just doing this to conform? What motivates them to do this?

I'm trying to form an opinion on my own here with the help of other atheists.

As a Christian, i find your idea shocking and rude and...

Oh wait, I was imitating what happened in the other thread.

Maybe they like what they are taught. You are a very rude person. Go to some other website if you want to disparage believers.

The other thread was an open invitation for discussion - up until someone's panties were bunched.

This thread is vastly DIFFERENT because you know right from the start that your comments aren't wanted. Not trying to bait you on here.

I'm not sure why others do what they do but I can answer as someone who's mother is super religious. I do not feel compelled to conform. Maybe it's because she relies on me and there is a different power play(?) but I just won't do it. I love her and she loves me, she tells me often that she is grateful for all that our family does for her, but I will not go to church and pretend to believe in anything just to make her happy. And she has accepted this.

I have no problem with believers AT ALL (some of my closest friends are very religious). I'm just anti-rude people.

Such as this fine fellow from the other thread:

Anonymous wrote:Why are atheists even involved in a discussion like this at all? If a bunch of religious people want to talk about what motivates atheists, why should atheists even care? After all, all atheist means is someone who doesn't believe in god. If religious people want to speculate about your motivations, what is the point in trying to prove them wrong?

It's because you think religious people are wrong and stupid and you want to prove that they're wrong and you're smarter than they are.

If you don't want to believe in god, then don't believe in god. Do you go on message boards to justify why you don't believe in UFOs and the Easter Bunny? If not, why not? Those don't really exist either, but lots of people believe in them.

If you want to hear from atheists only, the Religion board may not be the best place for you. But you knew that.

Jeff moves atheist threads to Religion so are you sure it's not the right place?

If you check out page 17 of the other thread you'll understand this one's creation.

But frankly op I think this just brings us down to that posters level.

I wonder how quick it will take Jeff to delete this troll thread.

It's more of a retaliation thread than a troll thread

Well if he's going to start deleting, then he has his work cut out for him on the other thread.

If you find this one so objectionable you should head over to the other thread to condemn your compatriot who's spouting off the same thing but sincerely not joking

You yourself just admitted it's merely a retaliation thread. You've also tried to prevent other people from answering. I think you'll find your attempt at trolling is not turning out the way you'd hoped
