| By any chance, has anyone here on DCUM been given Amitriptyline for chronic pelvic pain? If so, what has your experience been like with it? My doctor prescribed it today and wants me to start it tonight, so hoping someone else can tell me what to expect. Thanks. |
| I was only on it to prevent migraines. As the dosage was increased to try to make it work, it made me too sleepy. |
| It's not good for a chronic issue. As in not good to take long term. If you're taking it once every 24 hours you shouldn't be driving or operating heavy machinery. Also, it only gave me about 3-5 hours of relief. |
| OP here! Big thank you to both of you PP's. This information is great and at least I know what to expect and what not to do. Really appreciate your help. |
That doesn't sound right to me, as it is a commonly-used anti-depressant. |
+1 My mother has been on it for 10 years for depression. |
The PP must be mixing it up with another drug. |

No, it is used for chronic pain as well. I've been on it for migraine in the past. I've had better luck with nortriptyline.

| I tried it for vulvodynia and did not have success. |
| It's an older antidepressant, and yes it's prescribed for pain management as well. I think grogginess and dizziness can be a significant side effect for some people. |
| I'm OP here, and nope, not mixing up the drug. While it is an anti-depressant, it's also very commonly used for chronic pain, which is what my doctor wants me to try it for. |
Nobody said you were mixing up the drug. The mix up comment was in reference to another poster claiming this isn't a long-term use drug. It most definitely is. I used it for chronic nerve damage. I could only take it at night because it made me so sleepy but it did help me not experience nerve pain at night. |
| I take 20 mg at night for interstitial cystitis pain. It's good, and it does make you sleepy. |
I'm glad everyone mentioned the sleepy factor. I tend to be a night owl and save a lot of my work for the late night hours, but I'll start planning to do my work earlier in the day knowing this. Really appreciate all those who've chimed in! |

I took it many years ago for endometriosis and didn't find it made much of a difference in my pain. It was really constipating for me as well. It didn't make me sleepy at all but I'm a really bad insomniac!
Good luck if you do take it and I hope your pain improves. |
