VA in-state options for 3.4 u/w (3.8 w) GPA

What VA in-state options are considered safeties vs. reaches for 3.4 unweighted/3.8 weighted GPA with PSAT score 720 verbal and 670 math? (no hooks, no sports, ec is theatre)

VCU, Christopher Newport, sometimes George Mason depending on major and the school you're coming from.

Thanks -- coming from a FCPS HS; not sure of major yet

JMU, VCU, ODU, Tech, Mason, Mary Wash.

I know two students, same HS, same GPA, one did arts, no sports, and got into JMU but not Mary Wash., the other did sports, not arts, and was the opposite. Sometimes it's a "who knows?"

Or you could always do two years of NOVA and do the guaranteed UVa admission.

^^^guaranteed provided there is space in that incoming class.

I'd say that GMU and MWC are reaches with a 3.4 UW. Longwood, CNU (may also be a reach), JMU, VT. I know nothing about Radford other than its old old old women's college rep, but I'd guess it's an option too.

Not based on my experience. It depends on the types of classes your DC takes...AP/IB....a 3.4uw/3.8w is very solid for these colleges. My DC got in EA to GMU with similar GPA...took many AP courses.

Guaranteed with a certain GPA. If OP's kid struggled to get a UVA worthy GPA is HS it's not guaranteed that NOVA will be different.

Is the GPA at the end junior year? My DC had around a 3.8 weighted at the end of junior year (a 3.99 at end of senior year) and got into Virginia Tech Engineering. His SATs were the reverse.

That's great! congrats.

More a comment than an answer: JMU or VT. Over and over I see students get into one but not both - and it's very, very odd even their stats - like it's orchestrated.

Are you also considering out of state options? There are state universities that have similar costs to VA in state and that GPA would look good as an out of state student.

We have not considered out of state as we thought costs would be higher everywhere.

We have looked at some state schools in PA and Ohio with out of state tuition costs <$14k. A few have been in the $10k range. The PA state schools seem to have comparable tuition rates to in state VA.

I have to second the PP's comment about oddities with JMU/VT admissions. If anyone has any insight, I would be curious as to what is going on there. At DD's FCPS, everyone says its harder to get into JMU with the exception of VT/Engineering, abd that you need nearly 4.0. Is that true?

The average GPA at GMU is a 3.66 and the 75% SAT (new scale) is a 1310. They accept 66% of applicants and the OPs kid is comfortably above average stats wise; in what way is it a reach?
