VA in-state options for 3.4 u/w (3.8 w) GPA

At DD's FCPS, everyone says its harder to get into JMU with the exception of VT/Engineering, abd that you need nearly 4.0. Is that true?

All these schools have Common Data Sets that have this information. Compare and contrast.

We have not considered out of state as we thought costs would be higher everywhere.

We have looked at some state schools in PA and Ohio with out of state tuition costs <$14k. A few have been in the $10k range. The PA state schools seem to have comparable tuition rates to in state VA.

Thank you! I had no idea.

tech/jmu are fairly likely.

For example, tuition and fees out of state:

California U of PA, $14,069
Clarion, $14,660
Edinboro, $10k
Slippery Rock, $13,400
Cheyney, $14k

I don't think you mean University of Pennsylvania. Not $14,000 unless you are factoring in your financial aid package.

Sorry, I just saw it's California University...my bad reading.

Bumping the thread to thank this poster. I did not realize there were out of state schools with $10-15K tuition for OOS students.

Are there recommended websites to search for schools with these lower tuition rates? (Collegedata.com allows a search on COA but not solely on tuition.)

Other than Slippery Rock, I haven't heard of any of those schools.

Re: Va colleges, all that matters is what stats are needed to get in from your Virginia high school.

So how do you find those, short of relying on self-reported results in Naviance? (We're in a non-TJ FCPS high school.)

I posting mostly to discount posters from outside FCPS who report overall acceptance rates of Va colleges. Op, naviance is it. Apply widely. There so many Va publics, she can probably apply to most of them.

So she applies to:
JMU
VT
CNU
UMW
ODU
GMU
VCU
Throw in - UVA or WM, in case she gets lucky and beats the odds.

That's 8 applications. Am I missing any? Even if it's 10 or 12 schools, who cares? She can apply to them all.

OK, PP here -- I've got another one. She could go to UVA at Wise. Would she put up with a tiny school? Very far away just to say it was (kind of) UVA?
Anonymous
I would have her determine which of CNU-UMW-ODU-GMU-VCU she prefers. It's reasonable to assume all are safeties unless something they get their jollies rejecting students who wouldn't come, so maybe choose 2 just in case. Next she should know if she prefers JMU or VT AND she should voice her preference to her counselor (this is the most important thing she should do) Then she could apply to both UVA and WM.

Mid and low tier Big Ten schools will prob throw scholarship money.
