fungus toenails

Anonymous
I've tried the nail polish remedy from my dermatologist and the fungus has just spread to four different toenails over the course of the last four years. Has anyone tried the oral med? I understand it's tough on your liver and you have to have weekly blood tests. Plus the fungus may come back eventually after you stop the meds. Any other fungus sufferers out there? Solutions?

I had a bit under one nail, but it didn't spread much. I soaked my foot in warm water and lots of vinegar nightly. Not a nice smell, but it got rid of the fungus. Probably did it for a month. And kept trimming the nail down as far as I could. The less there is to grow there, the better.

What's the nail polish remedy, by the way? I've never heard of that.

Tell me more about the vinegar method, please! My husband used a topical med, and it took almost a year but as his toenail grew out, it went away. I now picked something up under 2 nails. Cut them both below the quick this week to expose the fungus. But, I'm pregnant (9wks) and don't want to use any meds, but am worried if the fungus is worse than the meds, so a natural remedy like vinegar might be the trick.

OP- nail polish remedy- a clear polish prescribed by a derm or podiatrist that supposedly kills the fungus. Both my derm and podiatrist told me it doesn't work very well but I was willing to try it. Sure enough, it didn't work and now the fungus has spread as a bonus! Anybody out there who has tried the oral meds and had success??

Apparently fungus likes an alkaline environment to hang out in, so putting it in acid (vinegar) makes your toe less inviting.

This is TMI, I know. The fungus I had made a buildup of "stuff" under the toenail, so I cut it as low as possible, trimming almost daily or every other day. I also used to use the edge of a tweezer to kind of scrape away some of the gunk. I disinfected anything (clippers, etc.) that touched my feet immediately (glass of isopropyl alcohol next to tub). Then I'd do a mix of 2/3 vinegar and 1/3 really warm water in a bowl for 15 minutes each night before I went to bed. And soak my foot. This REALLY dries out your skin, so if you can just do a toe dip, that might be better. I dried very thoroughly, and changed bed sheets, towels, and bath mats daily. And bleached the crap out of my tub multiple times a week.

It took about a month for mine to go away, but I think mine was pretty mild.

I've heard eating lots of probiotics helps, too, yogurt, kefir, etc. It can't hurt.

I'm the vinegar poster. My mother took the pill they prescribed for this and it worked. I never really asked if it had side effects or not though.

I know this may sound weird, but try Vick's Vapor Rub. Cut your affected toenails down (with sterilized clippers) and spread Vick's on and around the area, under the toenails. Repeat twice a day. It will eventually turn black, and new fungus-free nail will grow in. At least this is what is happening to me. After about two weeks, I am seeing definite improvement. Podiatrists out there, have you heard of this remedy? I read about it on the internet and was (of course) extremely skeptical, but it seems to be working.

A friend of mine worked in boots and got it. What was the cause of yours?

I took the pill for a nail fungus about ten years ago. I had the fungus ever since I was a child, my dad and brother did as well. Mine was the worst, brother's eventually went away. I had no side effects from the pill but did go to the derm for regular bloodwork. I had tried a topical cream and polish with no luck. I don't recall how long it took (six months? A year?), but my nail is totally normal now. No sign of fungus ever again. GL!

OP- I'm curious about the Vick's remedy. Any podiatrists or dermatologists care to weigh in? Thanks!

My husband did the pill about 4 years ago and it worked. He had to do the blood tests and even went in for an ultrasound of his liver when they were worried. It did work and he had not gotten the fungus back since then.

OP, a few years ago, a big yellow circle appeared on my toe nail (or was it under it, I dont' remember). I didn't see a doctor, and I didn't try any type of medicine. Anyway, if this is the fungus, this is what I did:

I took special care to wash the toe nail when showering, just soap and water.

I got rid of this one pair of shoes I would wear all the time without socks, they were the type of shoes without a heel. Somehow I think the problem came from the shoes. So, then I wore other shoes with socks for awhile, or I would go barefoot as much as possible (like inside my house) to help heal the toenail.

The nail slowly grew out (and I would cut it as needed) until all of the yellow was gone. (I think it must have been the shoes.)

I had excellent luck treating my toenail with straight tea tree oil.
