Expectant and Postpartum Moms
| i'm not even matching my shoes and clothing anymore. i feel fat and i can't stop eating. i've been counting my calories everyday, but i just seem to keep counting them higher and higher. i've gained more weight than i wanted to at this point but the demons in my head keep telling me its ok to eat more. I must caveat that with, i eat pretty healthy, almost all whole foods, nothing fried, i try to avoid sweets though occasionally my husband and i will split an ice cream cone, but i eat way to many meals and snacks and fruit during the day. fruit is healthy but 8 pieces still has a lot of calories. anyone have a way to calm the beast inside? |
| OP here, I'm 24 weeks along and i've gained 28 pounds thus far, 3 of them in the last 3 days. |
Please speak to your doctor - 3 pounds in 3 days is a lot and may indicate something that needs to be addressed. |
| Are you sure? I guess I can give a call regardless, but I've eaten like 3000 calories a day in the past three days, so I just figured I was being a piggy. |
|
Are you swollen? 3 lbs could easily be attributed to water weight. Try to add some lemon to your water, etc to see if you can flush out the extra water (if there is any).
And my doc said as long as my weight gain is right around the number of weeks that I'm pregnant, then I'm fine. You're a bit over that but not by much. I wouldn't personally be worried - some weeks I'm ravenous (last week for example) and then this week not so much. |
| Probably a growth spurt, around that time too I had larger bumps in my weight and I felt the same as you. (I also went on vacation that didn't help probably) It was bad because some of my clothes weren't fitting anymore and the last thing I wanted to do was buy more maternity clothes. I'm 35 weeks now and the weight gain slowed down since that time. Just stay active while you can, it's harder for me to exercise now as opposed to then. Hang in there! |
Her total weight gain is right around her number of weeks, but 3 pounds in 3 days is unusual and her doctor should be aware. I am not trying to freak anyone out, but sudden weight gain is a symptom of Preeclampsia. Just call the doctor to be on the safe side so that he/ she is looking out for other symptoms. |
| Well, I promise I will call the doctor...but the main question is still calming the food beasts...any tips? |

I'd try to stick with proteins over carbs but it sounds like you are probably already doing that. Besides that, try to drink some water when you feel the urge to eat and see if you are truly hungry (sometimes the water will make my hunger go away). After that, if you need to snack I'd just stick with fruits and veggies. No magic answer unfortunately but I'd imagine that this will pass so in the mean time just fill up on things like string cheese, yogurt, nuts, hummus, etc.

The only thing I can recommend is basing your meals on veggies, fruits, whole grains, lean proteins and healthy fats. Of course you're going to have treats, and that's no big deal. I find that I'm not as ravenous if I fill up on the other stuff first. Also, if you go a few days without eating sweets, you may see some of the 3 pounds disappear, because there's a chance it's simple water retention. I know if I'm eating a lot of sweets, I gain a lot immediately in water weight. Lots of refined carbs = major water retention. |
| I'm pretty much eating what I want and have gained more weight than I'd like, but still having a very healthy and normal pregnancy and my doc has been right on board and says everything looks good. Honestly, I think you should talk to your doctor about it. |
| Call your doctor, sure, but 3 lbs in a week at her stage of pregnancy is not really that outrageous. I have only gained about 28 lbs (at 38 weeks now) but earlier on would fluctuate two pounds in a single day based on liquids consumption and (this is TMI, sorry) bowel movement patterns... I have no PE or any other problems, just had some weird fluid retention / bloating early on (which, I am happy to report, is no longer an issue and at 38 weeks I still have the same ankles I had starting out -- woo hoo!). OP, you are at the rapid weight gain place in pregnancy. When your baby goes through a growth spurt, mommy gets hungrier. I don't think the 300 extra calories a day is a hard and fast rule -- you eat more when you're hungry, less when you're not. I had all of my weight gain right around where you are and not as much during the last trimester. Other women are the exact opposite. It's not typical to get PE in your stage of pregancy but of course you might want to check in with your doctor to be safe -- especially if you have other symptoms like a headache, funny tics with your vision, or tenderness in your upper abdomen. But let's remember that Edema is normal in all pregnant women -- it's when it gets really severe that you need to worry. |

I gain 26 pounds with both my pregnancies and with both of them I gained 9 (NINE!!) from week 26 to week 27. So almost a third of all my weight gain happened in 7 days out of 40 weeks...
I am very petite and both my kids have been small too, but I was perpetually hungry, even as I was puking 4 times a day. I wanted BIG , hearty meals, not just a snack... I coped eating tons of fruit, yogurt, a lot of cheese and crackers, drinking gallons of water and yes giving in occasionally to a huge plate of carbs. My body just craved them. My doctors was never concerned. |
She gained 3 pounds in 3 days, not a week. I know maybe it is alarmist, but better safe than sorry. With regard to taming the beast - lots of little meals with balanced fat, carb, protein - but it sounds like she is eating pretty healthy things, and 28 pounds is not all that much, so maybe just go with the flow and keep up what ever you are doing. |
| three pounds in three days, sure. I was fluctuating 4 lbs in a single day or two! I came on this website and people were like "you have preeclampsia!" My doctor prescibed me a stool softener and told me to drink more liquids. No Pre-E. OP should check with her doctor, but people need to be careful -- you're scaring someone, maybe unnecessarily. |
