Federal exodus

There is a lot of talk about a federal exodus of feds not willing to work for Trump. These stories make for interesting reading but has the ever really happened? I remember 2 foreign service officers quit under Bush but that was about it. Did feds leave in noticeable numbers under Nixon? I think this is mostly talk and the ones who do go will be the retirement eligible who were thinking of calling it quits anyway. I don't think you will see the 25-55 year olds with mortgages and kids leave.

The situation (at my agency) is that around 30% of the people are ELIGIBLE to RETIRE and are only sticking around because they like the work and their colleagues.

If even a hint of shenanigans occurs, they will just walk out the door. And if that happens, the shit. will. hit. the. fan. because a lot of these people were in the agency for decades and have a tremendous amount of institutional knowledge that they will take with them. That's how I am reading it.

So if 20-30% retire (and these are the ones who are the agency experts at the 15 and SES levels) and then Trump imposes a freeze on hiring new staff, those of us young GS-13s and 14s will be in hog heaven.

Your workload will increase signficantly. But you knew that, of course.

And morale will be pretty dismal, but a businessman like Trump knows that morale... Oh, never mind.

Assuming you can actually run it, and put up with Trump while doing it.

Hmm. If people are talking about leaving because they cannot, in good conscience, follow his orders, then hog heaven might not be the best description of the situation.

The fed is so bloated now its ridiculous. Please... everyone start walking out the door. You won't be missed.

You have no idea what you are talking about. There have been long term hiring freezes.

What if they left and no one missed them. Could you cut 70% of the bureaucrats and policy makers and no one would miss them? Don't we have enough paper now to last into the next ice age?

I suspect PP also complains that the wait time is too long when he calls a fed agency.

I wonder what the deputy to the deputy to the assistant deputy of deputies for the mid-eastern kugel inspection branch will do when they have to get a job in the private sector. Could be interesting.

More people get sick from contaminated food. It'll be great.

Yes actually, I do.

If they wrote subparagraph 3 of paragraph 77 of section 55 of document 102 volume 16 properly (or better yet, just deleted the whole volume altogether), I wouldn't be calling in the first place.

A friend of mine described the mood at her agency as 'suicidal'. You mighy enjoy that notion, if you are one of those who hate the government. However, when the President will need something done and not enough people are there to do it, it will be bad for all.

There's no one checking the contaminated food now. They're all in federal agencies in DC surfing the internet, yammering in meetings about the most inane shit and trying to figure out the proper pantone shade of red to use in the next interdepartmental logo for the new org chart (and reviewing if times roman courier new 12 is the proper font to express their mission... which is the inspection of peapods in the northwest Idaho sector). It's a very impotent job, doncha know!
