The scenery, other than the flavelas, is very pretty, but a culture where that is acceptable is ugly.

US culture is no different and in fact, arguably worse as we are so rich yet accept homelessness and poverty as inevitable.

In the US - many places. lol.

What’s so bad about it? I have never even heard of it before so I had to look it up.

Agreed‼️

I was sick of the hotel food so I decided to walk to a local sushi place. I had to walk on the shoulder of the road because they don't have sidewalks and someone pulled over thinking I was a hooker!! I was wearing normal business clothes.

🤭😂😂

Gross that you are saying those kid’s hunger ruins your day out shopping for sundresses. Wow, just wow.

Why don’t you do something so that fewer kids are hungry?

You know that millions of children grow up in poverty, right? This is not about the “culture “ in one country?????

Do you contribute to charities?
Vote for politicians who would pass a living wage bill?

That’s one of the things I love about SF in the summer. Coming from the heat and humidity of DC, the weather in San Francisco is so refreshing.

I have extended family in San Francisco and went a few times as a kid in the 90s and had good memories. Then all of them moved away or died and my cousin and I went back in about 2010 on our own and we were shocked at how much worse it was. Haven’t been back since. And yes we went in July and could see our breath in the air in the morning.

We didn’t have kids at the time so went to an adult only resort and all the topless women and just drunken behavior in general was too much. I guess that was resort specific but turned me off wanting to go again, Maldonado got roped into a timeshare speech to get tickets somewhere and that was awful too.

Same, Cancun. Generally like all inclusives but it was not good despite the great reviews. Also found the employees significantly less friendly and on the ball than other destinations.

As a veteran of 20+ visits to the yucatan since the mid 80s, the resort and location you choose can range from unbelievable to unbearable.

I have had some of the best report experiences there (Tres Rios, Mayakoba, Azul Beach - old one, Xcaret) as well as some of the worst (one I won't name that was chosen by friends where we left a paid week after 2 days and I paid for everyone to go to one of the above).

I agree with this - I've also been going to the Yucatan since the 80's and avoid the resorts altogether. Get a an airbnb in a smaller beach town (Puerto Morelos, Akumal, Tulum, etc). It's paradise.

I don't hate Spain but I don't need to go back. It's the budget version of Italy or France

This is such a helpful thread and I appreciate the honesty. I feel it's so hard these days to get honest feedback on travel destinations due to heavy marketing and people feel badly about trashing a destination.

For example, one time I asked when my breakfast order would be out as I’d been waiting for a long time. I asked politely and the waiter yelled at for being an American who can’t enjoy her holiday. I was told to calm down too. It was such an extreme overreaction.

Never experienced this in any other European country.

Spoke the other day to a friend who went skiing there and told me how rude everyone was. I told her I know exactly what you mean!

Not surprising at all this country welcomed Hitler with open arms. I’m sure they do it again today in a heartbeat.

Where in Austria were you? Can you give examples of negative interactions outside the hotel? How were you identified so easily? When was this? I’m curious because this thread has been helpful in thinking of destinations and potential pitfalls to avoid.

It’s a common misconception but Hitler was actually Austrian.

I'm a different poster who had a completely different experience two years ago in Austria. It is still one of my favorite family trips to date. We spent a week in the Austrian alps and the people were lovely!
