As for “The T Word”, it matters little. That which we call a rose/by any other name would smell as sweet. It is objectively true that this word has become racially coded, and some find that unappealing. You see it in the increasingly evasive headlines about urban crime, with all the references to joggers, motorists, pedestrians, scholars, honor students etc. The sad truth is that demographic realities of crime in DC will make any forthright references to criminals become racially coded over time, and some will then object to that formulation on grounds that aren’t entirely unreasonable. We’re all just on the euphemism treadmill. It’s a small point.

The more disturbing abuse of language in this thread is the description “fight” applied to Clockwork Orange-style ultra violence that creates great risk of extreme bodily harm. This is a new and disturbing phenomenon, certainly in Bethesda, and the shameful attempt to sweep this under the run with “teens will be teens”—another T word we might lose soon in this context—is immoral and dangerous. Taking the people who commit acts like this off the street for a good long time is the only way we can have a civilized society, and nobody, not least the self-righteous soft-on-crime squishes, is going to like the world that emerges if something is not done, and soon.
