I'm currently nannying for 3 (11.39) elementary age and homeschooling them. I make over $1k/week, and I have zero overhead. The last time I was at the park on my phone (yesterday), I was adding something to one child's portfolio, answering the mom's question, adding videos and pictures from the park to the dropbox folder I made for the parents and grandparents, checking the portfolio due dates, ordering one of the snacks that we buy in bulk to be mailed to the house, and checking on the scores from the standardized testing the children did. Oh, and I did all of that while supervising the children, talking to parents and other nannies there with other children, reminding the kids to drink more water, and playing with them. Oh, and I scheduled two playdates for this week, one via text and one with a parent present at the park. |
Oh my god. I was at the park with the 2 year old I was nannying when she had a HUGE potty accident. Like, 30 minutes of cleanup in a sweltering park bathroom type cleanup. Once Ifinally got her clean and comfortable, I sat on the edge of the sandbox while she played (safe, contained, and occupied) so I could text mom about it (we were in the thick of potty training). A woman immediately marched up to me yelling that she was a “concerned citizen” and that “my boss wasn’t paying me to sit on my phone all day ignoring the child” and demanding I give her my boss’ phone number. The look I gave her when I said, “Yeah, I’ll do that,” was so icy that she walked away mumbling to herself. MYOB. |
If it makes you feel any better, my first offers for nanny jobs weren’t even minimum wage. I make $33/hr now because I have many years of experience. I am educated, very reliable, drive, speak fluent English and get paid legally. The specific area and job market also make a huge difference in salary. I also do a whole lot more than talk on the phone at the park. |
