Is coconut cream pie a lower class dessert?

Correct me if I'm wrong, isn't coconut cream pie basically just vanilla pudding mixed with a bag of coconut, dumped in a pie shell, then topped with whipped cream? There's no technique involved and it's not really worth the calories.

(Whipped cream)

Was this in the class marker handbook? People obsessed with finding these markers have a stench of insecurity about them.

Sorry to have outed you, but now you know better and can do better in the future.

Agree with you about the pie, but there are low-class desserts. Carvel ice cream cakes come to mind.

Dear God leave my Carvel cakes alone! Freaking crunchy goodness! What is wrong with you?

You are incorrect. I mean it is entirely possible someone has done that and called it coconut cream pie but that is not a traditional coconut cream pie. This thread has at least two recipes postes

+1 loved the fresh ones at the Carvel
Store in NJ, but still buy one from freezer section for some birthdays.

The crunchies are the best part!

No it is not. A real coconut cream pie has a slow cooked coconut custard. It does not involve any of the following: pudding, vanilla, or bagged coconut (except maybe toasted and sprinkled on top as a garnish)

NP. You are both correct. But I'm willing to bet most of the grandparents in the 1970-1980s were doing the boxed vanilla pudding way...and also making banana cream pie just like that too. It was super popular and easy.

Gee whiz, thanks for the help. Now if I only cared what try hard losers desperately trying to seem important thought about the food choices others make.

PP with pudding and "bag of coconut" wasn't a hyper-literal recipe but it's pretty darn close. The recipe I saw on page two was hardly much different, just a little more time consuming.

You are right, people just don't like to think about grandma feeding them processed crap, but she probably was. This is the whole reason boxed pudding mix was invented and was flying off the shelves. A LOT of people were (maybe still) were making their pies this way.

It has a slow cooked homemade custard and a homemade meringue. If you think that is the same as instant pudding, and a can of whipped cream- then you have obviously never tasted it.

Now I’m confused. The recipe above said to add coconut to the custard as it cooked—is that not bagged coconut??

Coconut Cream Pie from MonkeyPod Kitchen in Maui is my all time favorite dessert.

Cream pies are the bomb. The combination of whipped cream, smooth custard, buttery crust is out of bounds.
