My grandparents were quite poor and it seemed to be a staple at their house when we visited. I rarely see it anymore. Wasn't sure if it was just an older generation dessert and/or a lower class dessert. |
I think it’s just old fashioned. There’s no such thing as a low class dessert. |
Really. Look at the places they let bread pudding into (as long as it is dressed properly) |
you see it down south some. |
No...it’s just old fashioned. Like 1950s. |
Oh man this forum asks questions that would never occur to me. |
What's with the obsession of foods by class strata?
Food is food. Healthy food is more expensive (generally), but plenty of lower income people prioritize healthy food, and plenty of rich people like junk. Eat what you like, try to eat what nourishes you, and don't host people for meals who will be judgey jerks. |
Apparently coconut was a fad in the early and mid 1900s when dried and bagged coconut was first mass produced. Before that coconut was a rare very exotic item because it spoiled. Once dried and bagged coconut was on store shelves, it was a novel item and desserts like coconut cream pie became very popular. |
Yeah, I know the first thing I think of when choosing a dessert is "what will this say about my class status?" |
Alert! Class obsessed dcumer! |
Stupid question. |
Agree with you about the pie, but there are low-class desserts. Carvel ice cream cakes come to mind. |
It's just more old fashioned.
There is no dessert class ranking,. except on DCUM. |
Who cares? |
+1 Maybe it was really expensive for them and they wanted to serve you the best thing they could. Maybe you don’t remember, but coconut cream pie was you and your little brother’s favorite dessert and you threw fits when it wasn't there. Maybe it was Grandma’s favorite. Maybe it was the only dessert they liked preparing? Maybe it was readily available at their grocery store or bakery? I would literally never think to call something that was provided for me a low class thing. And who gives a flying fck? I will never win with SES gate keeping, so I choose not to play the game. Wealthy people can slum as much as they want and people laud them for it. So enjoy what you enjoy. |
