+1. VA has had a virtual school option pre-covid at the state level. There is no reason for individual school districts to manage this. Move it to the state level.

MCPS ha VA. This is the MCPS board. Start your drama elsewhere. We are divided up into counties. Its not how it works in MD. Different states have different ways of doing things.

PP, why are you trying to shut down this discussion? The other posters are sharing information about other districts in comparison to MCPS and giving examples of how other places do things as a way to ask about the possibility for further virtual options in MCPS. You are bringing drama whether you mean it or not.

Because those here don’t have kids in virtual and are speculating and wrong.

Mcps has a virtual academy. Demanding the state do it or comparing it makes no sense. You clearly don’t have kids in it.

MCPS has a virtual academy for this year only. Other states have virtual options in normal times. That's the difference. Enjoy VA this year but don't expect it to be an option in the future.

Stop making up stuff. They have already planned it for long term. It’s a full working school. You clearly are not following.

What happens to the teachers if the mid year student outbound is greater than the inbound? For example, I know a family of fence sitters who opted in late but have now reconsidered.

They stay. Again, you need to pay attention. The staff were hired for virtual. Some teach at a school and virtual as well but they have jobs through the year. They are still hiring and taking more kids in as they can. If they are interested they should apply to get on the list. They can always decline when they get an offer. Most fence sitters who applied though mid august got in. They are still on boarding new teachers to expand. They are asking families to commit to a semester at a time. I doubt that many will leave mid year and those who left left already.

To clarify, the fence sitters I know did get in. But they now see in-person is fine and will be leaving the VA at the semester mark.

In person is not fine but then they go back. What is the drama about? That’s great as they have really large class sizes so less kids the better or the slots get filled by other families.

Wow this is great to hear. My kids are thriving in he virtual academy and I'd love them to have the option to continue next year. They are introverts and in person is hard for them.

We applied and never heard a thing from VA, despite repeated emails. It's just a total black box, no one to talk to, no one cares. It's really opened my eyes to the callousness and dysfunction of MCPS.

That seems strange. When did you apply?

Same here. They send out canned emails and no one seems to read anything you write in the email. Such a waste of tax payer money

Reach you and ask. They have limited staff.

I'm curious to see what the enrollment numbers look like once the pediatric vaccine was out.

OK, you do that. Many of us aren't rushing back to MCPS even when our kids are vaccinated. Mine just got vaccinated. We plan to stay the year. Not what you want to hear but you can still get covid vaccinated and its not worth the risks without universal mandatory testing and social distancing. From the posts here, all the quarantining and disruptions aren't worth it and we'd rather have the stability of virtual. There will always be a group of families who want it and its great they are offering it how, even if the numbers go down. We aren't ruling out staying a few years. Our only issue is our home school will not allow activity participation despite saying they do and as promised by virtual. But, no big deal, we do outside activities.
