Virtual Academy

The teachers at FLVS also got my 60-70 something year old parents to be active/understanding in my education. Something that they struggled with for many reasons before, transportation, not seeing value in parent/teacher convos, and not completing middle schools themselves.

What are you rambling about and why? This is MCPS. We have a virtual academy.

It does not seem to be something they are interested in continuing when not in a pandemic. The MD superintendent is not a fan of virtual school, so I don't see a statewide option like FL. MD parents have to pay for the online schools that are free in other states. DCPS seems to have very limited virtual options as well.

They let in any one in who applied within reason and are still letting students in. Stop rambling about DCPS or PGCPS as this is MCPS. They are doing VA. They are planning to keep it. It is free.

Given the staffing shortages all around Moco (my school has two additional teaching positions that have not been filled in 6 weeks and probably will not be filled given then lack of candidates) mcps was not going to overexpand the program.

+1. VA has had a virtual school option pre-covid at the state level. There is no reason for individual school districts to manage this. Move it to the state level.

I agree- it seems like the MD officials are very against it but I don't understand why. I have family in FL whose kid switched to the state virtual program for a year when undergoing cancer treatment (this was pre-pandemic). Why doesn't MD care about medically vulnerable kids? Also makes it much easier to be flexible during pandemics.

That’s great! It doesn’t change the fact that what is offered is still very limited. Maybe you don’t care but other parents do.

MCPS ha VA. This is the MCPS board. Start your drama elsewhere. We are divided up into counties. Its not how it works in MD. Different states have different ways of doing things.

No, its not limited. Those of us who applied got our kids in. You clearly have no idea what you are talking about.

PP, why are you trying to shut down this discussion? The other posters are sharing information about other districts in comparison to MCPS and giving examples of how other places do things as a way to ask about the possibility for further virtual options in MCPS. You are bringing drama whether you mean it or not.

PP has been invested for quite a while in MCPS driving its own virtual program. It’s not clear why since it’s a suboptimal way of doing things.

Mcps has a virtual academy. Demanding the state do it or comparing it makes no sense. You clearly don’t have kids in it.

How it is not optimal. It is larger than a in person school and it runs as like any other school. It has the same curriculum so kids can return in person easily.

MCPS has a virtual academy for this year only. Other states have virtual options in normal times. That's the difference. Enjoy VA this year but don't expect it to be an option in the future.

They are expanding and hiring new teachers as kids keep getting class changes.

We have a county system and mcps has a virtual program. Stop complaining about nothing.

Stop making up stuff. They have already planned it for long term. It’s a full working school. You clearly are not following.
